My dh, son and I are taking a mini vacation/road trip. To save on meal costs, I'm making a "party" sub. I bought a loaf of Italian bread and will slice it, like they do at Subway and load it with my sandwich fillings and place it back in the bag that the bread came in. It will make at least 2 to 3 lunches for all of us.

I like to make salads in canning jars and I put the dressing on the bottom and pop them in the cooler. when it is time to eat we turn them upsidedown and by the time we fix a drink it is ready to eat. I also make fruit salads in small jars and even poke cake is nice to have along for a change.

My hubby and I just took a trip to Texas. We drove 9 to 10 hours. I should have fixed sandwiches. After reading these tips, I'll do it next time. Thanks.

My family did the same thing on long car trips growing up. However, since everyone in my family had different taste preferences, my Mom kept bread/hoagy rolls, lunch meats and cheese slices in separate containers in a cooler. And she also brought along Peanut Butter and Jam in camping tubes for my brother. Then we could "build our own" sandwiches at meal time. She always had cookies, fruit, yogurt and GORP (peanuts, m&m's and raisins) for us to snack on too. So much healthier and more enjoyable than fast food. This topic brings back many happy memories!

I make sandwiches from hoggy buns with several layers of cold cuts and cheese and wrap them individually. I place them in the freezer and get them out as needed. SOmetimes we pop them in the microwave. I always have them ready for road trips. When the kids come home (4 to 7 hour drives away) I always send them home with sandwiches for their trip home.

A rind is a terrible thing to waste. Compost.

When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.”

I thInk its a great idea. Just remember that the bread may get very soggy, so you might want to be sure that you use a hearty bread or keep the filling separate until youre ready to eat! Have fun on your trip!

Everytime we took a vacation growing up. Mom would pack us food to eat on the road. Sandwhiches etc. It was fun cause usually we stopped at a rest stop and ate. This wasback in the late 50's and 60's. When my own family went on mini vacations I would do the same. It really saves on money.
