What other fish can I use for a recipe that calls for Halibut? I don't want Cod (too salty in my opinion). Any ideas? I can't find Halibut in our stores here.

I've been trying to support our local businesses more since Trader Joe's opened (I shop at trader joe's too but want to be fair) anyway - I planned a halibut dinner for 2 and ended up paying $28 for just the two of us. Yikes! To be fair I bought too much - it is hard though, living inland and wanting to serve fish. Availability and price may vary depending on season too....

That's not too bad--Mahi Mahi is a pricey fish. And Halibut even more pricey. That's why I don't buy it anymore. The last 2 pieces of halibut I purchased from a Kremer's market near my home rang up $23.00!!!!!

I just made fish for 5 people and the recipe called for Coley, which is a meaty white fish, mostly found in Britain, so cod is a good replacement. I've never thought cod very salty, but I do appreciate that it's mild. Anyway, I ended up paying $17.98 for 5 pieces of fish. Not whole fish, just pieces of the filet!

I do go to Krogers, but they didn't have it. They did have Mahi Mahi, and I almost bought some that was marked down. I thought even that was high priced ($5.45 for 2 servings). Yikes!

Mahi Mahi or snapper. What store are you shopping? I note that you're in Ohio--our Kroger stores locally consistently stock Halibut, but it ain't cheap. In fact, I find it ridiculously priced.

There is a handy guide online by the Environmental Defense Fund that outlines most seafood and fish and how to make your selections at the store, depending on where it is caught/raised based on their ratings for sustainable fishing and healthy environment. We keep the pocket version with us when we shop. This may not help you find the substitute for halibut, but when you do go shopping for fish, it will help you find the healthiest and most eco-friendly choices!
