Hello!
I am wanting to take the plunge into pressure canning this year. Up to this point I have been scared to try pressure canning with out my mom, stems back to memories of green beans on the kitchen ceiling once when I was canning with mom at home.  But I am going to have bite the bullet and figure it out alone since she won't be back to help me with this. So..
What pressure canner do you recommend? Brand?
I have found the really range in price..from $99 at Wal-mart to several hundred dollars..do get waht you pay for in this case?

Michelle, if your mom's is a weighted canner, it should be fine if you replace the seal, which is cheap, cheap, and if you check the petcock to make sure it is lifting up and sealing off the top. You can go online and find manuals for specific canners, even old ones. If it is a gauged canner, I would be leary of it because those gauges can rust and be unpredictable.

Thank you for your input, as I was mulling this some more while trying to drift off to sleep last night, I thought about my mom's canner that must still be at the homeplace in the basement somewhere. I am going to ask dad if he has seen it recently and see what kind of shape it is in. But maybe I should just invest in a new one so I know its up to today's standards..hmmm.

I have a Mirro with the weight as well and have had it for over 20+ years and have never had any trouble with it either. I did have to replace the seal once though.

Michelle, every person loves THEIR brand of pressure canner. I promise! :-) Those who own the very expensive all American canner is loved by those who have it, but that is a mighty big jump to take if you are not sure how much you are goingto can. There are two kinds of canner - the kind with the guage and the kind with just the weight. The guaged ones have to be tested by your local extension office each year for saftey. The weighted ones do not. The weighted ones are cheaper as well. I have a Mirro weighted canner that looks just like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MIRRO-12-quart-MIRRO-MATIC-Aluminum-Pressure-cooker-canner-M-052-Complete-unit-/110809006197?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19ccbb4075 I bought it new in 1977 and it still is working like a charm. I have canned thousands of pounds of food in mine. Another brand that also has a weight is Presto. Be sure that you buy a pressure CANNER and not a pressure COOKER. Hope that helps.
