Violet's birthday is coming up and we're doing a "Clifford, the Big Red Dog" themed party and I wanted to make that little snack mix, "puppy chow" but remembered that it has peanut butter as an ingredient, and a few of the kids we're inviting have terrible peanut allergies. I don't want to tempt that fate with another butter (like almond butter) though I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem). So, what's the verdict on soy-nut butter? Anyone had it? If it was mixed with chocolate and powdered sugar, would anyone know the diff?

Thanks!

I agree. Being limited in what I can eat (corn is in so many food products!)....such as I don't go to restaurants because I can't be sure of ingredients and servers who say, "I'm sure it's fine," without thinking that through.....I love to eat what I can!

Yep, I know that, but these mother's seem to have the "better to err on the side of overly cautious" than most folks. I get it, but then, I think it can be a little ocd, too. I don't take food allergies lightly, but if you're not allergic to it, then why not have it?

People who are allergic to peanuts are not necessarily allergic to all nuts. Peanuts grow underground and all other nuts grow on trees. I can eat all tree nuts.
And...you're welcome!

Suzanne, that helps immensely! I read so many conflicting views of the soy butters and had a dear friend, a devout vegetarian and obsessed dieter tell me that they just went back to peanut butter because they never found a "soy" butter they could stand. I'm thinking since most of the mom's said they stay away from all nuts, regardless of the allergy, I'll try the sunflower seed butter. I have read positive things about that, and now with your endorsement I don't feel so helpless!

I buy the soy nut butter, the IM Healthy brand. Make sure it's the one that says Peanut Free! on the label. I am severely allergic to peanuts and corn. I have to be very careful when I read labels. There are times when the ingredients are fine, but underneath it will say that the product is made in a facility that also processes peanuts. That's out for me. Kids who are allergic to peanuts (and people like me) can have a severe reaction just from smelling peanuts. My throat closed up one time that I got some peanut butter on my hand!
Incidentally, the soy nut butter is very good. You can also buy Barney Butter, which is peanut free almond butter. Or try Blue Diamond almond butter. You may know them...they have the roasted almonds in a can. Peanut free! Also, there is the Sun Butter brand sunflower seed butter. Very yummy! I prefer the almond or sunflower seed butters in taste over the soy nut butter. Hope this helps.

I know, Kathy! I just thought, "hey, wasn't there a snack popular a few years ago called "puppy chow"?! That would be a perfect fit! I found the recipe and went, "oh no! peanut butter!!!" and thus, my search begins. I had no idea about soy allergies. Amazing, truly--thanks for the information. I think I will email mom's, as you said, and find out specifics. If it's "too much" finagling, then we'll nix the puppy chow all together. Next forseeable problem? Dog bone shaped cookies. Will have to look into gluten free recipes, no peanut butter, wheat allergies....I'm thinking it might just be better to have the parents bring their child an "allowable" snack bag!!!!!

And all you want to do is have a birthday party, eh?! I do have to agree with MaryBeth. I have a terrible soy allergy...in all forms of the stuff.
Soy was the one of the first genetically modified crops used commercially. A farmer can drive thru his field with a tractor spraying Round Up and everything dies except the soybean plant. Scary, huh? I may not actually be allergic to soy, but to Round Up! haha

It is my understanding that almonds are the least allergenic nut, but some kids are allergic to tree nuts...probably the easiest way to go about this, is to contact each parent and find out exactly what their kids can/can't have. That eliminates the guess work.

Bless your heart for being so considerate! Good luck with the party.

I'm not sure about the soy butter either. Some people are not able to have soy either and I know that our natural doctor discourages much soy use. I'd get on the internet and do some research.

I haven't tried soy nut butter. But, maybe go to the chex site, I noticed lately they have a TON of alternative kinds of puppy chows maybe you will find a different one to try. There is one with white chocolate chips and lemon juice I wanted to try. (lemon flavored puppy chow, with white chocolate instead of milk/semi sweet chocolate). But, I do love the traditional one for sure! lol haha I think I also seen a recipe on pintrest done with nutella, not sure if any one would have a hazelnut allergy or not. Sounded awesome though! lol
