Hi Farmgirls!

MMMmmmm, mmmm. I am making one of my favorite meals for my dd and dh tonight. Homemade Texas chili, served with fresh buttermilk cornbread baking in my cast iron skillet. Will top the chili off with cheese and sour cream, and wash it all down with fresh-brewed ice tea! It's a chilly night out, so it's a "chili" night in! Wishing I had a kitchen-full of farmgirls to share it with!

Does anyone else have anything yummy you're cooking up tonight?

Farmgirl Hugs,

Nicole

Ribs and beans. DH's choice. He'll cook, I'll clean.

I had a pot of collards on the stove but my sister came over and we sat on my side porch and I forgot about the collards and they burned. Did get to them before the pot was damaged.

Tara your supper sounds so good. Hadn't had Anasazi beans in a long time. Maybe I can find them on Amazon.

Give it a go Judith! I maintain a steady 250 -300 degrees most of the day. Mine is the All American Sun Oven, and I purchased mine when they were quite reasonable. Now they are SOO expensive (like everything else ARGH). Mine needs a bit of repair but is still functional.
So cool that you have one your dad made.

When my Dad, a physicist/electronics engineer, retired he needed something to occupy his mind so he started creating various sun-operated gizmos around the house. One of these was solar ovens. He got good at it and they worked well. I have one of them but keep forgetting to bring it out. I'm thinking of putting it in our trailer so I can bake while camping. Our trailer has a microwave oven which does no good when there is no electricity.

Sara, I love mine, but often forget to use it. It is radiant heat, so the food doesn't burn.
I put a frozen chicken in there yesterday at about noon, and by 5 it was fork tender in luscious broth.

Lisa, decades ago I made tasty buttermilk biscuits but not anymore, that's why I buy the can ones. For me biscuits are like cornbread dressing you have to make them often enough or you lose the gift to do so.

You are the second person I have known that used a sun oven. Years ago I took soap making lessons from a woman that lived off the grid and had a sun oven. Your steak sounds delicious, enjoy.

Sara, I love a good biscuit, but have never mastered that fine art.
I have a chopped steak in the Sun Oven with pepperoncini, rotel and onion. I will serve open faced over a ciabatta roll with mozzarella.

Sounds really good, Sara! I have some chili in the freezer and might try that.

My big meal is at lunchtime and today it's canned biscuits from Aldi with chili w/beans over it. Might grate some white cheddar cheese to go over it. I'll eat two biscuits today and flash freeze 6.

It's 50s at night and 80s in the day but it feels so much cooler than the 100+ we had for the past several months. I am so ready to turn on the oven and do some real cooking. Kate your dinner sounds so good.
Lisa -- I need to visit the butcher and get some sausage. Soup weather is just around the corner.

Judith, I think we’re on the same page wanting some roasting weather! Temps are getting colder here (40’s this morning!) and I have a roasted Provençal chicken thighs recipe planned with our garden tomatoes, green olives, shallots and herbes de Provence. Lisa, sounds like we’re getting comparable weather to you! I just saw some sauerkraut in my fridge this morning and said it was getting to be a good time to do some brats too!

Judith, you know how much I love a Greek salad!
Tonight is leftover sausage, kale, potato soup. Temps in the 40's. Perfecto!
StitchinWitch Posted - Oct 09 2024 : 3:48:27 PM
Greek salad tonight; roasted game hens with orange sauce tomorrow. October is here so the summer electric tariff is now over. I can turn on the oven almost guilt-free.

It's fall so for me that means butternut squash. Today I made a butternut squash and ground beef skillet dish. So good. Had a serving for lunch, a serving for supper or tomorrow and two servings for the freezer.

I made the Roasted Chicken and Buttercup Squash with Herbed Honey Mustard in the Oct-Nov issue. I misread the ingredients and used a butternut squash, but it still tasted good and my sweetie liked it.

My cardiologist told me how he cooks dry beans. I staple using either 4 cups of water-creates little gravy, 5 cups water, some gravy, 6 cups, good gravy. Just tried it today. Added dried jalapeños, dried onions, garlic and bay leaf.Should be great. Beans are the mayoco beans which cook up creamy.

Kate, your chicken of the woods mushroom dishes sound so good. Not sure if they grow in part of Texas but I have seen them on the cooking shows I watch.

Sara, here in MA it’s getting cooler so it will start to be perfect spaghetti sauce-making (and eating) weather! Last night, hubby cut a nice chicken of the woods mushroom from our neighbors’ property, so we are deliberating whether to make “chicken” parm or nuggets, or a wild rice and mushroom stew, all of which we have tried before and liked. Whatever we make, we will be sharing with those neighbors because it will be a lot!

Grass fed 93/7 ground beef meat balls and spaghetti sauce. So good I don't need a side dish or salad.

Judith, glad you were able to find fresh turnip greens. We were on the same page yesterday; I cooked lemon garlic pork loin in the slow cooker with a large sweet potato and carrot.

Marinated pork loin, mashed potatoes, turnip greens, honeydew melon. I seldom buy produce at walmart but we were there yesterday and I found fresh turnip greens. A first for this area.
