We also threaded our apple slices or spirals onto thread and hung it in the window to dry.

oh p.s. i think you probably can use almost any kind of apple .. if you are NOT going to eat these .. use the cheapest ones you can get your hands on .. all of mine came from our apple trees (and even off the ground) .. you can just cut the bad spots off.

you can use a screen and let them 'air dry' .. or even put them in the sun (just keep them away from too much moisture -- and BUGS!). you can use a dehydrator .. you can put them in a low temp oven (i have mine set at 200 degrees .. and i let them stay in until they get dark brown (then .. i add the spices). the screen ones are 'white gourds' .. not peeled .. just look that way cuz' they are white. i didn't peel the apples (except the ones i fried up). and i cut mine in small chunks . .but you can do bigger ones (or even rings) ... i think if you put 'lemon juice' on them .. they stay a lighter color if you prefer that. they are in a 'holding pattern' on the screen .. i don't have the space or patience to dry this huge amount i have done by air. i've made two HUGE bowls full of them already (using the oven). hope this helps gurlfren!
