I don't know who had the slow cooker recipe for apple butter, but I made 8 pints of it today and it is delicious!!!!!! I used the hot water canning method, which I never did before. A lot f work, but well worth it. Thank you!!!!!

I just core and slice my apples. I leave the peels on. At the end of the cooking, I use my immersion blender to break up the peels. Its yummy.

Oh my....After slow cooking my apple butter for over 30-hours I processed mine for about 15-minutes in the canner, if you don't you have to refrigerate and use up rather quickly!

Cynthia, I am not going to take credit for this recipe, I got it doing a search here on MJF. I don't remember who posted it, but it is delisious and easy. It was made originally to freeze, but I caned mine. It is dark, but alot better than any store bought, that is for sure!!!!
Crockpot Applebutter
3 quarts apples sliced very thin
1/2 cup water
Place in slow cooker on high all day or night, then add:
2 1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cloves
2 Teaspoons cinnamon
Cook on low for 4 hours. Stir, place in hot jars and seal.
Hope this helps,

Jan

Hi Cynthia,

I just use what we pick wild :) A friend actually gave us some small apples from her trees this year, some were tart and the others were sweet. It ended up being the best batch I have ever made. I'm sorry I am not much help with letting you know what kind of apples are best.

Hi Cynthia :)

I'm not sure which recipe Jan used but here is mine that I posted:

Crock Pot Apple Butter

Wash and cook apples in large pot after removing stem and blossom ends, When tender and cooled, push through sieve or food mill.

8 Cups Applesauce
4 Cups Sugar (2-white/2 lt. brown)
½ cup apple cider or cider vinegar
2-teaspoons cinnamon
1-teaspoon ground cloves
A pinch of baking cocoa

Place all ingredients in crock-pot. Cook on low 10-12 hours. Make sure steam escapes when it starts boiling. Stir occasionally. Pour into sterilized jars and seal.

Yield: 4-6 pints

*You may need to adjust cooking time for desired thickness

**I have made this with the cider vinegar and it comes out good, but if the jars aren’t going to be used within the year, the flavor tends to sharpen.

Would someone mind sharing the apple butter recipe? I would love to start doing this. Last year I canned 79 quarts of dill pickles. I had fun doing it but I didn't like them (my husband and daughter love them) because they are squwishy! The taste was great, but I can't get over the texture. I would love to make some apple butter. My MIL is great with canning. However, I don't think that she has the patience to learn fropm. Plus, she insists on doing it in her tiny kitchen rather than coming to my house where I have an huge open kitchen. So, I haven't been able to learn from her.

God bless,

Cynthia

Good for you all!! Apple Butter is the best. We have a Lodi apple tree that makes the best apple butter. You just peel and core and start cooking and it immediately goes to applesauce stage. No straining, no nothing. They make terrible pies because of this. Bake them in a pie and you get applesauce pie!!! :-)

I'm glad someone elses is really dark too! When I made mine, it turned almost a burnt color. Tasted fine, just didn't look that great :s. It tastes yummy though!

Good for you!

I put up 22 1/2 pints of apple butter this season from some lovely Wolf River Apples which I slow cooked for over 30-hours in the crock pot adding apples, sugar, cinnamon and just smidges of all-spice with each addition. The apple butter is a color I could not have imagined...almost a "nuttella" kind of deep brown and it is so good!

Isn't jamming and making fruit butters FUN?
