I have water bath canned homemade pumpkin butter for years. The recommendation to not home can it has just been in the last few years.

I baked my own, homegrown, pie pumpkins and made puree. I then cooked it in the crockpot with sugar and spice.

I decided to sterilize my jars, and heat my lids. I then filled the jars hot, and screwed on the lids. They actually popped later, without canning them. I let them cool, and moved them to the refrigerator where they will last for about up to 6 months (according to my research I did).

I read that canning pumpkin, requires a pressure canner, and that is for cubed pumpkin only.

I will make more puree and freeze it for future baking. I can't wait to plant more next year. I love the taste of homegrown pumpkins.

Are you using fresh pumping or previously commericially canned pumpkin? If using comercially canned pumpkin I would for sure, can it. I would probably try the pressure canning if you have one, as it's already "mushy" so not one of those things you need to worry about the texture on.

I have heard of people pressure canning it. I'm not sure of the details. You might look it up online.

I wouldn't suggest canning it at home- I understand that pumpkin is just too dense and it can be hard to make sure it cooked properly for long term storage. Does it freeze well?
