Ok, I have a fig tree full of figs. Well, it's only a few years old and as tall as me. But has lots of figs on it. I just pulled off 2 ripe ones. Does anyone have any good fig recipes? I saw on CITR blog where Suzanne made home made fig newtons. I need to find that recipe because that's something I really want to make. I have 2 other smaller fig trees that have some on them too. And a friend said I could have all hers.

I did eat a few yesterday. They are good. But so slow in ripening. I was at the grocery store today and saw a little pint container of Black mission figs. They were just $2.99. I was expecting them to be at least $6 but not here I guess. Not too bad. I think there were about 9 in the container.

They do, Kris...Figs are what our ancestors ate in Greece, Italy, Egypt, etc...that climate is perfect. I don't see them here in Kentucky, unless they are an ornamental grown for leaf as opposed to fruit.

Yum, yum, yum! All these recipes look so good. I am going to have to get a few more fig trees now. And I can't believe how expensive figs are. Good grief! 5 fo $4.99? That's crazy. Yep, I need more trees now.

Ruth said she can't have figs trees where she lives because it gets too cold for them there. And she's only about maybe less than 100 miles from me. So I guess they need more hot weather to grow?

You're welcome Kris!

I found the site yesterday and wished I had figs :) I saw some at the grocery store and they were sold in packs of five for $4.99 and who knows how ripe they would be. :(

Have fun!!!

Kris, I found the recipe. I got it from Food Network a few years ago. I was looking for something Italian because I was making an Italian dinner for a Christmas time get together. Here's the link: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/giada-de-laurentiis/fig-and-walnut-cookies-recipe2/index.html

I bought a canning book that has two fig recipes in it- http://www.amazon.com/Canning-New-Generation-Flavors-Modern/dp/1584798645/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314900585&sr=8-1

Kris, I went home and scoured my cookbooks for fig recipes and all of them use "dried" figs. I was so bummed! Here I thought I could help! That's what I get for going "ugh, figs" (turn the page)...

Sharon, I have saved that site. Oh my goodness, I want to make everything on there. Yum! Thanks for posting the link. And the jam looks way too good. I am going to have to make some now. I wish they would hurry up and get ripe now. They are taking forever for some reason.

I don't know what all is in it, cause I didn't keep the jar! UHG! But, a few years ago Trader Joe's used to sell garlic fig sauce. I Looooved the stuff! But, they stopped selling it. It was very pudgent. And was a dark brown. For sure had garlic, figs, and onions in it. I've searched online for recipes but never found any. If I ever actually had a tree where I could get them for free I would probably experiment. The sauce was not really for dipping, (too strong) but it was GREAT in omlettes! I loved it in my eggs. I used to use it every morning in my eggs, I had no idea Trader Joe's was going to discontinue it or I would of kept the jar with the ingredients!

Drying them sounds really good...Let us know how the dehydrator works with that.

Do figs grow well in the far north?? We are going to be planting at least 3 more fruit trees this fall and a fig tree sure sounds sweet!

Jonni, now that first one sounds too good. I love goat cheese and sausage. I will look it up. Thanks so much.

Ruth, please come see me. I will go try to get my friend's figs and you are welcome to all you need. Just let me know when. I had not talked to my hubby in a few days so I am sorry to have cut our phone call short and didn't get to the part where you wanted to come visit. So please do. I would love for you both to come.

Michele, that sounds good too. I have a dehydrator. If you have that recipe, I'd love to try it too. Thanks so much.

What about drying them? I have a cookie recipe that I make at Christmas that uses dried figs (not it's not a fig newton).

Kris, I really would love to have some of your figs to make my sweetie some Fig Preserves. We'd love to come to see you too!

This got a really good rating on Epicurious, Kris...and I might even eat it! (Grilled Sausage and Fig Pizza with goat cheese)

This is one I have at home in a Bon Appetit collection.

These all seem to be "tarts" both savory and sweet. I will happily bring the few in I've found. One is from this great cookbook from the chef who's often on the Victory Garden (Michel Naiswan). Let me see what I can dig up. If I were going to look for recipes, I'd probably hit Epicurious.com for them--it pulls from Gourmet, Cooking Light and Bon Appetit magazines, where you'd see more fig recipes.

That would be nice, Jonni, if you have time. I just have no idea. I guess I could look on line for some. I don't really care for the preserves. Maybe there is some way to cook them with meat or veggies?

I have run across some beautiful sounding fig recipes, Kris, but honestly, I don't love the way they "look" so I've never made them!!! I do love fig newtons, though :)
If you'd like, I can get a few together and send them your way.
