We usually cut off a couple of slices and put them in a sandwich container on the counter. the rest we slice and put in a plastic container in the freezer. We refill the sandwich container when it gets empty and the bread is always soft...

I use those bread bags too, but my dollar store carries a brand that is just as good and of course, cheaper than Debbie Meyers. But Debbie Meyers is good too.....

Those bread bags work great. They are from Debbie Meyers. I just can't find them anymore.

I got some of the "bread" bags from the store. All I remember is that they were in a green box and she has vegetable bags too. They seem to make a difference. But still, not as long as store bought.

There is a trick a bread-making friend taught me. It helps! When the timer rings for the oven, turn the cold water faucet on. Take the bread out of the oven, out of the pan and immediately run it under cold water- super quick- don't soak it. Then wrap in a towel. I let it sit there for 15-20 minutes and then unwrap and sit on a rack. This makes the crust softer and it stays softer a lot longer.
Seemed weird to me too... but it works! No butter or oil on the tops to soften them anymore. =)

I use honey as my sweetener in my bread recipe and a dough conditioner, both of those help my bread stay fresher a bit longer. But, I don't think homemade bread will ever stay soft as long as store bought bread.
