Does anyone enter their canned goods in their local fair? I'd like to do it but I have no idea what they are looking for other than "aesthetically pleasing" and processed according to USDA guidelines. Is that it? Of course I totally missed the class they gave on how to enter. It was a month ahead of time and I'm just not that efficient. I'm thinking of entering some jam-raspberry, lavender and pepper (seperate jars-not all together:-) Any advice would be much appreciated!

My fair is lookin for 'eye candy', as they don't open and taste them. The jars must be very clean, the lids and rims without dents or scratches, and they seem drawn to anything that's got a little different look to it.
I entered for the first time last year and took 1st place with a cucumber pepper relish. It wasn't that pretty to me, but was the only sweet relish that contained more than just cukes. I'm sure that's what did it!

Can you ask your county extension? My county extension has all the info on entering in our county fair. I too, am entering canned goods for the first time this year and I can't wait! They've been able to answer all my questions too regarding specific jar size, canning method used, etc.
I wish you the best of luck at your fair and I can't wait to hear how you did!!!

Find the booklet the fair puts out or the website. The guidelines are in there. I just entered ours. There is a day set for bringing everything in, usually just before the judging, which you don't have to be there for. Later in the day we can swap out any open items with sealed ones and bring them home so they don't go bad because they goods have to stay until the end of the fair on Sunday. I didn't have a clue last year, but the folks at the table are really great about helping out.

I remember entering baked goods in the fair when I was in 4-H, I was terrified of the judges, but I think going through that taught me to do my best and to develop "poise" when my products were not perfect.
It's too late for this year but next year? I will have to keep in touch with the extension office to get a good heads up for next year.

Hi Nancy,
I have not entered yet but I got the information needed (requirements for canning entries, all entries, etc.) from our local county extension office.
Actually Raspberry-Lavender Jam sounds wonderful :)
