I think I have planting amnesia! I really don't remember planting so darn many turnips...

Any good ideas of what to do with them? What things might make good bakeover combos with these guys?

Thanks!!!

XOXO, Libbie

You all are so great! I'm working my way through the recipes and so far, I haven't tried one I didn't like. I still have to try Mellaisbella's scallops... and I won't be omitting the cheese - it sounds yummy!

Durn - due to the fact that I was in the hospital having a baby, I didn't get to see Jenny or give her a bunch of turnips - doesn't the world have a funny way of timing things sometimes? I suppose my new little Arthur just wanted to be in the middle of the action!!!

peel and slice turnip
peel and slice onions
layer turnip and onions,as if you were making scallop potatoes
add enough chicken brothto reach 3/4 of the way in the dish
now top with cheese , if desired.....bake at 350 for approx. 45 minutes or until tender
DELICIOUS!!!!

Just found this recipe in "The Yellow Farmhouse Cookbook" and thought of this thread. I haven't tried it, but it looks good.
Turnip Slaw with Buttermilk Dressing
4 med. turnips, peeled and grated
2 stalks celelry, cut in thin pieces
3/4 c raisins
1/2 c buttermilk
2 T olive oil
1 T fresh lemon juice
1 T cider vinegar
1/4 t dry mustard
1/2 t salt
1/2 t sugar

Mix together first three ingredients. Whisk together remaining ingredients and toss with vegetables.
Serves 4

I love them roasted. Peeled, wedged, and either alone or with carrots, parsnips, beets, potatoes, garlic. All cut into roughly same size, oven 400 degrees, in large bowl mix with salt, pepper, and olive oil... and sometimes thyme, and balsamic vinegar (half the amount proportionately to olive oil). Spread onto rimmed baking sheet in only one layer, (covered first with parchment paper if, like me, you're lazy). Bake until all can be pierced with a sharp knife, and depending on size and age of veggies, 45-75 minutes. Great as leftovers, too.

There is a Redeemer.

Oh yes, turnips and potatoes, or parsnips and potatoes are yummy. But I've never mixed all 3 together...I will try that!

I like to make mashed potatoes w/ turnips. Just boil or steam them and mash them right in with the potatoes, I like to use about half potatoes and half turnips with butter and milk of course. Mashed potatoes and califlower is also very good.

Okay - boiled turnips with butter tonight for us!!! I'd never thought of turnip kim chee - it sounds GOOD with any oriental food - would you just add it to the cabbage or do it separately?

I wish you all lived closer - I may be able to get some turnips to Jenny, but I would just LOVE to have you all over for a turnip festival!!! Hey - now there's a new idea for a farm fest - the annual Turnip Fest - nothing to "turnip" your nose at! Who knows what may "turnip?" I may be getting carried away here.....

Oh..I love turnips!! Didn't get any planted this year though. Hmmmm.... I love them just boiled and mashed with a little butter, salt and seasoned pepper or in stews ..I bet they would be wonderful in a bakeover..I hope someone has some ideas. I am just sitting here drooling.
