I had 8 1/2 dozen canning jars given to me today, it was perfect timing since I only had 2 jars left and was going to have to go buy more. Most are ball, kerr and atlas but about 3 dozen were old mayo and pickle jars. My grandmother used them and obviously my friends mother did also as evidenced by the 3 dozen jars, but I have read you shouldn't use them. This is the first year I have canned vegies and don't want to take a chance on them breaking and wasting my food. I've never used this type of jar even when making pickles and jellies, I've only used canning jars. Do any of you use them or should I stay away from using them?

My mother also told me my cousin had alot of jars he no longer uses and I could have them if I want them. I am thinking about going and getting them also even though I don't need them right now. Would y'all? I am just getting started good with my canning as I have a large garden and have been getting vegies from an uncle's garden. His girls don't want the vegies this year so my daughter and I have been getting anything they don't want.

Thanks Angelia, I just looked at the jars again, 6 had the ball "B" on the bottom with a number, there was also one that had Kerr written on it, I am assuming the same is true with Kerr jars. The B is the same font as the one that is written on the front of a jar, are these the canning jars? I did sent some left overs home with my mother yesterday in some of the jars. I had thought they would be good for that as I send a lot of food to her house, (she is widowed and doesn't cook often).

I went to my cousins house and got another 7 dozen jars, 2 boxes had not been opened. I am so thankful for the jars, I have always frozen my vegies until this year. He said he had more in the storage building out back, I almost feel guilty taking so many jars. I will repay with food, as both of my angels are widowed.

I have quite a few jars that most people think are mayo and pickle jars. If you check the bottom of the jars they will state if they are Ball or not. All of mine say ball, who made jars for commercial use years ago. They were made just like the regular canning jars only round and smooth for putting labels on. The jars are safe for use if they state Ball on the bottom.

I never give my smooth sided jars to anyone, they would either not trust the jars or keep them. I have a few collectable jars I keep spices and such in, but any usable jars are in service in my house.

You could use your mayo and pickle jars for storage of things around the house. I found that they are perfect for pencils, pens, scissors, crochet needles, and they are great on the picnic table to hold silverware and napkins rolled up! You can get some nice marbles and fill them and use them to hold down paper plates and such if it's windy. They also make nice candle holders filled with a little sand or river rock or whatever and they are good in a light wind if you keep the candle inside the jar!

Just like everyone else has said, I wouldn't use the mayo and pickle jars for canning. We find plenty of uses non-canning jars. DH uses a pasta sauce to transport his breakfast OJ to work for example. I like to plant herbs in them as well.

I wouldn't use the mayo or pickle jars for canning, but, they come in handy for dried stuff, dry beans, grains etc.

There are never, ever enough jars at my place...I stock up on them when ever I find a good deal, or someone gives them to me, cause they are no longer canning, just make sure there are no chips at the mouth or on the threads, cause they will not seal well, and will let ants and such get in...

Go get the jars from your cousin and don't use the mayo and pickle jars. You can never have enough jars! You need to use new lids everytime, but you can reuse the bands. The mayo and pickle jars seals have already been heat set and can't seal very well again.
