Can you eat it raw--read somewhere it irritates the tongue. It's very young so mainly leaves. Any good recipes? JoAnn

I make a Vegetarian Times recipe for Swiss Chard and Caramelized Onion Lasagna that is just wonderful! If you do not have it, or cannot find it online, email me and I will send it to you. You can use any type of Chard in this recipe.

It's great raw, but my favorite is to fry it a bit with butter, Bacon, garlic, and then cover it with grated parmesan when served. So good!!

The tears I shed then, watered the flowers I harvest now.

I just found out that I can eat Kale Raw, now Swiss Chard this is a wonderful thing! The folks that I bought my Kale from at the farm market told me how to make a massaged salad. If you google it, there are lots of recipes.

For some reason, we can grow swiss chard easier than spinach here. I love it, and use in place of spinach often. I also read somewhere that the stalks can be cooked similar to asparagus, but have not tried that yet.

I make a bean soup with it. Cooked white beans (I like cannelli) a cup or two of chicken stock ,sausage, a quart jar of canned tomato sauce bay leaves, cook a little while, add what ever herbs and seasonings you like, thyme, rosemary, basil is really good in season(but not w/ rosemary), lot's of freshly ground pepper, kosher salt. Add near the end, huge bunches of carefully washed and finely chopped swiss chard. Put a lid on it simmer slowly about 5-10 minutes till chard is well cooked but still green.
Serve with hearth bread

We love it in omlets

chopped onions cooked in butter until translucent, add chopped swiss chard till softened, whisk up some eggs, add to veggies, when the eggs are almost done add feta cheese cover for a minute or two, uncover, fold over let it rest on a plate till the toast pops.

I shred up leaves in salads all the time with no irritation at all. Have done it for years. I adore swiss chard..it just goes on and on forever..just cut it off and let it grow more leaves..don't harvest the whole head..it will go on until even after a couple of frosts. I love to stir fry it with a little olive oil and bacon for one thing..it is great in soups too.
