My mother gave me a vaccum sealer yesterday that she has had for a while, (she never uses it). She said she also has the attachment for jars but has to find it. I have checked the prices of bags and they are expensive. Are they worth the expense for freezing food? Does your food last any longer in the freezer using the vaccum sealer vs freezer bags? Any information and tips you girls can help me with would be greatley appreciated.

Thanks so much for all of the information, I will try ziploc bags, she had a partial roll of bags with the sealer, so I may try them also. Where is a good place to find them on sale?

I am going to mama's this morning to help her find the jar attachments. She is on a spring cleaning spree so I better help while she is in the mood :)(She doesn't clean things out often) Thanks again.

We use ours all the time. Don't know what we ever did with out it. We use it for everything.

I use mine all the time, especially the two jar attachments. I save jars that have the screw on lids with the seal inside. I use them to store miscellaneous dry goods in. Vacuuming them really makes the stuff last. I also use the bags to freeze veggies, fruit and meats. I always look for the bags when they are on sale and stock up.

Happy to be a "Raggedy Ann" in a Barbie World!

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

I have a sealer and I just use regular bags- they work the same! Also you can usually just do suction and skip the "seal" part.

The other thing is the bags are considered reusable so don't toss the bag after you defrost the meat. Use it again to store left overs etc.

To be perfectly honest. I have used Ziploc freezer bags for freezing and just squish the air out. Things seem to keep just as well as when I vacuumed them. I have done both, but the bags/rolls are kind of spendy. There was a new kind I saw at the fair this past year that uses bags, but they are re-usable, over and over again. I am going to look into that a little closer if they are at the fair this fall.

I do LOVE the jar attachment tho. I buy lots of dry goods in bulk and re-use canning lids. I bought some 1/2 gallon bottles just for this purpose- besides using empty canning jars. I vacuum pack organic coconut, nuts, oatmeal, etc. I use lots of dry cranberries and when I vacuum those in the bottles, they are still soft and fresh when I open them months later.

So, my opinion is split. Love the bottle tool, iffy on the bags. Not sure the cost out weighs the other options available.

Do what you love, love what you do.

I really like my vacuum sealer especially for the jars. I don't use it so much for freezing simply because, as you said, the bags are expensive. The vacuuming of the bags does make for less freezer burn, but I have found that doing that plus wrapping in freezer paper is the best way to go.

If you would like to see how I use my vacuum sealer, I have a post on it at http://www.oklahomapastrycloth.com/blog/?p=2685
