Posted - Mar 17 2011 : 05:36:05 AM I was think about finding a good gas stove to put out on the back porch and do my canning outside. I have an elec. stove in my house and I always think gas is easlier to cook with. Where do yawl do your canning at?

Posted - Mar 16 2011 : 08:27:10 AM I must say I love my All American Pressure Canner! So much in fact I bought a second and am looking into a third. AA's have no seals to deal with and are heavy enough that they will out live me. In fact my 22 yo son and dil have already put their names on one of mine! Best of all they are made in the USA. Yes they will cost you a bit more but in my opinion well worth every penny spent!!! http://www.allamericanpressurecookers.com/ or you can get them through amazon and people sell them on ebay, that is where I bought my second one. |

Posted - Mar 16 2011 : 06:28:05 AM Sherri, good for you!! And you did get a deal! :-) I have started canning a lot in pint jars now too because with the two of us, one pint is usually enough and if there are more people here I can open several pints. I use quarts to can my chicken, but soups go into pints. I used to cook for 6 and above but am getting used to cooking for two now!

Posted - Mar 15 2011 : 11:23:14 PM I canned chicken soup for the first time tonight and I'm sooo excited! So far I'm just working on Pints, but I bought my first quart jars last weekend at an estate sale. (2 dozen for $10! Around here that's a steal.) They look brand new and don't have any chips or flaws in the rims... I can't wait to fill them up!

Posted - Mar 15 2011 : 5:22:38 PM Actually, both of them hold the same number of quart and pint jars, but hold more half pints because they can be stacked. Mine can't. But there are just two of us, down from 6 plus friends :-) so we have drastically reduced the size of jars. Like I said, I love my Mirro because it is so simple to use, however, there are all kinds of other brands out there that you might compare. I'm sure there are other opinions out there. As I said before, talk to 10 women who can and they'll give you 10 different opinions!! The price on that canner is good if it will stay there but you might check that new one athttp://cgi.ebay.com/Mirro-92116-16-Quart-Pressure-Cooker-Canner-/270716298382?pt=Small_Kitchen_Appliances_US&hash=item3f07f2e48e I'm not sure how that kind of weight works but it appears to have the same concept as the older one. Oh! If you get the older one, check to see if it has a new seal. If it doesn't, you will just need to order one. They only cost about 8 or 9 dollars.

Posted - Mar 15 2011 : 5:05:34 PM I am thinking the bigger one is the best for me I like to do alot of big jars. Do you think that is the best one for me?

Posted - Mar 15 2011 : 2:26:49 PM Susie, I love my Mirro Pressure canner. It works with a weight and not a guage. I don't have to have the guage tested because there is none! Mine is an older one that I have had for quite some time, but I found it on Ebay as well as the smaller version that works just as well. It just doesn't hold as many jars. You can see them at http://cgi.ebay.com/Mirro-Matic-16-Qt-Aluminum-Pressure-Cooker-Canner-/270717529328?pt=Small_Kitchen_Appliances_US&hash=item3f0805acf0

If you decide that you want to bid on the littler one (it's a good price), let me know so I don't bid against you. I'm thinking about getting it to go with my other one. It's not a "have to have it" with me so I will bow out gracefully!! :-)

Posted - Mar 11 2011 : 09:56:33 AM Yesterday I canned up the last of last years squash, and organic mushrooms the store had on sale for .90 a carton. I agree about how great it is to have your own home canned food around! I'm planning to get some more soups canned up soon.

Posted - Mar 10 2011 : 5:02:47 PM I canned teriyaki chicken this week. SO yummy that I am going to have to hide it from the family! Our local store had a huge sale on chicken last week so I did that chicken, plain chicken and chicken noodle soup. Love my "pantry-store."
I am a pressure canning addict. It's wonderful to have such fine company!

Posted - Mar 10 2011 : 3:32:56 PM I've wanted to raise my bed for 2 years now but I have 12 feet under my bed! It's a king size sleep number and would require 3 sets of those post things! I never thought to use cinder block. I have a ton of those in the back yard.
I have to go find my 10y/o and send her after the wagon! I have a job for her!

Posted - Mar 10 2011 : 2:31:09 PM That is a good feeling to be able to go to your pantry and come up with a meal that you have already prepared by canning it or freezing it. I love that. Good for you, Elizabeth!

Posted - Mar 10 2011 : 09:30:48 AM Another good place is under your bed. It is a slightly enclosed place that stays cool. If you don't have a floor vent under it that is!! You can add a dust ruffle to help reduce airflow and the temp by a few degrees.

Posted - Mar 10 2011 : 09:07:45 AM I bought 6 because that was the limit!
Now to figure out WHERE to keep everything I am canning. We have very limited space. I may try and sweet talk my husband into hanging up some shelves for me in the laundry room. It doesn't get to warm since we just got HE machines. Think that would be ok?
