I apologize sincerely for sort of hijacking this thread, but I searched and searched and couldn't find a better place to put this, nor could I find the answer already posted.

I am gung ho and so excited to begin earning my merit badges in the sisterhood, however, I noticed a couple that go against my vegetarian/animal loving nature. Two for example: Hunting and fishing.

Has anyone come up with a creative alternative way to earn these badges? Just thought I'd ask. Thanks much!

My cousin is a vegetarian. We had her over for dinner a few months ago and we made a chocolate cake and stuffed mushrooms from www.vegweb.com -she talks about those mushrooms every time I see her-just went out to dinner with her last weekend she mentioned those mushrooms when she saw some on the menu.
Stuffed Mushrooms
2 teaspoon olive (preferably extra virgin)oil
1 carrot, peeled and finely diced
1 medium onion, finely diced
1/4 green pepper, finely diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon basil
1 teaspoon oregano
1 cup cooked brown rice
Vegan Italian bread crumbs
Salt and pepper to taste
4 medium Portabello mushrooms
Heat up oil in a non stick pan on med high add veggies and cook till softened a bit, add herbs at the end.Combine veggie mixture and rice mix well with 1 tbs olive oil- salt and pepper to taste. Wash mushrooms and remove stem- fill with rice mixture packing in a bit. Place in a oiled cassorole dish and cook at 400 degrees about 20 mins. I don't know if you eat dairy but if you do sprinkle a little cheese on top the last 5 mins.
Chocolate Cake
1 1/2 cups of all purpose flour
3 tablespoons of sifted good quality cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup white or brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
5 tablespoons canola oil
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup cold water
Preheat to 350 degrees
The recipe mentions you could substitute whole wheat flour for the recipe-didn't have any so I don't know how that would come out.
In a mixing bowl combine your dry ingriedents. Create three wells in the mixture. Place vinager in one, oil in the second and vanilla in the last hole. Pour cold water into the mixing bowl covering all ingriedents mixing well untill it isn't lumpy. Pour into a 9 X 9 baking pan bake 25 to 30 minutes untill toothpick test come out clean.
Frosting
1 cup vegan margarine-room temp
4 cups powdered sugar
2 tablespoon vanilla
4 tablespoon rice milk
1/2 cup cocoa powder
dash of salt
Use the hand mixer or a sturdy wooden spoon
Blend margarine and add sugar cocoa dash of salt and vanilla mixing well adding milk until smooth-you can add more milk if it's too thick or you like it thinner.

Hi Penny - I eat meat occasionally, but my husband is a vegetarian and since I do most of the cooking, I just don't eat meat very often. I was a vegetarian many years ago, then started eating meat because of some issues I had with anemia. I only eat meat that I buy from a local farm - I never buy meat at the grocery store. My husband became a vegetarian due to health issues (high cholesterol) - but then we read some books too and that was it for him. He's been a vegetarian for ~ 10 years and even before that, we didn't eat a lot of meat. You might want to subscribe to Vegetarian Times magazine - or take a look at your library. They have great recipes and a lot of interesting articles. I also have The Moosewood Cookbook and The Enchanted Broccoli Forest - both by Mollie Katzen. One of my favorite Moosewood recipes is the sweet potatoe and black bean tacos. I also use some Morning Star products for some normally meat based recipes and it is very easy. Love the crumbles (just like hamburger) and chik patties. My shepherds pie (with crumbles of course) is really good.

Lynn - I'll have to check out the website - its always nice to find new recipes.

As time goes by, it definitely gets easier... Good luck.

Hi Penny :) I've been vegetarian for 3 years now. Just never really liked eating meat but did it because I was "supposed" to. I do eat soy or tvp occasionally for some variety. In fact, I'm going to grow my own soy this year :) For recipes I actually have the best luck using food.com. They have a vegetarian section (http://www.food.com/recipes/vegetarian) and you can sort by what main ingredient you are looking to use.

have you looked at the book "the kind diet" by alicia silverstone? i just love it.....and she also has a web site "thekindlife.com". she is actually vegan, but her book has recipes for what she calls flirts, vegans and superheroes. i've been experimenting as all this soy and tofu stuff is new to me. we have an "Earthfare" store---it's kind of like whole foods----near by and they are just great about letting you have samples and trying new things to give you an opportunity to change how you eat. i don't feel like i have to be convinced to adopt a vegetarian life-style.....the problem i have is getting used to it....being able to round out my diet so-to-speak. oh, and to feel like i'm getting more textures into what i'm having at a meal. but anyway, i'm enjoying the adventure of learning this new way of life!

Hi Penny,
My husband and I have been eating semi lacto-vegetarian, and this is a recent change for us as of December. What kind of recipe's are you interested in? I have been getting a lot of recipe's from Moosewood Cookbooks and the Whole Foods website which offers a lot of veggie recipe's. Our problem too is that I am lactose intolerant and I try to cook things that have low dairy. We also currently live in Texas and are moving to Oklahoma- both meat heavy areas! I could use some encouragement too.
peace,
Crystal
