thanks ladies... I am still in the learning stages, or relearning.... I canned with my Grandmommy for years in my early twenties but I dont remember the details, I think I was mostly too busy then just enjoying my time and conversations with my dear dear Grandmommy... boy do I ever miss her.

I agree also. I found my pressure canner on Amazon.com. Also, any big kettle with a lid can be used for water bath canning. You can also use your pressure canner, just don't seal the lid. I recommend getting a really good canning book. I have the Ball Complete Book of Home Canning and Preserving. It gives you recipes, but also explains the difference between pressure and water bath canning. I have a Mirro pressure canner with a weighted vent, it is one of the safest kinds on the market. There are different sizes, but I have a large one because I can big batches!

Happy to be a "Raggedy Ann" in a Barbie World!

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

Exactly what Starletta said! Agreed your better choice would be a pressure canner.

Hi, HookAngel...you really need to buy a pressure canner NOT a steam canner. Steam canning is not safe because it cannot heat low acid foods to a high enough temperature throughout the jar to kill botulism spore which will kill you. Almost any housewares type of store carry pressure canners. I got mine a Sears.com

I'm so happy that you want to learn to preserve food! It is very rewarding.
