in my former life; we had access to gordon foods and the large plastic containers- also some smaller ones from dollar stores etc-- some of my things are from my garden but many are not-- also exhubby had a bad habit of breaking glassware so plastic was the prudent choice!

anyhow- my new kitchen needs a new look- funds are extremely limited and of course i want it all now!!!!!

suggestions......??????????????

i'm in the mood for a hunt so this may not occur overnite like i would want!!!!!and i may put the seldom used plastic ones behind a cupboard door!

thanx!! hugs!!!

If you want to recycle and not purchase....try baby food jars or 4 oz. canning jars.

I'm all for not buying what I don't absolutely need, so I use my used canning jars and have for years now.

Found this cool idea:

You buy these hexagon shaped jars here:http://www.specialtybottle.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=123.

fill w/ spices, glue heavy magnet to each lid and attached to magnet board or side of fridge.

I'll also label the bottoms, so I can find spices easier.

Congratulations on your new kitchen, Margo! How fun that must be!!! Like Amy Grace, I am using the 4 oz. canning jars, too. I've found them at Wal-mart (not my favorite store by any stretch, though), Target and the local grocery store. I just started using them the summer before last, and love them! They're really cute! I haven't converted all my spices to these jars, yet, but little by little, they're coming along! I also use these jars to store seeds from the garden - this is my first year doing so. Not sure if that's okay or not to store seeds this way, but it's working for me for now! :) I've made a couple of pin cushion jars with them, too. Have fun with everything! - Nini

Currently, I use Tupperware Spice Containers and a few small mason jars....but I really want a better system myself.

I've only seen the 4 oz size at one store - Fred Meyer here in the Northwest, it would be Kroger's elsewhere - I've never used them for canning anything but I like the look of them.

Hi Margo. I buy spices in bulk and so store them in canning jars with a lid and ring because that way I can vacuum seal them with my FoodSaver vacuum sealer. It keeps them fresh as can be. I use small, used, spice bottles or baby food jars to put in enough to use everyday while keeping the rest in the canning jars. I replenish from the jars. Everytime I open a canning jar, I just use a can opener and barely pop the lid so not to damage it and then, when finished, just put the lid into hot water to soften the rubber and vacuum seal it again. You can do this over and over.
