Last nite (New Years Eve) my Dh decided to treat us to something special, he brought home lobsters for us and his parents.
All evening we looked forward to them, he cooked them and my son's meat was RED and taseted BAD. We don't have lobster too often, but enough to know that was not right. Plus all the other ones cooked in the pan(4 more) tasted moldy. It was gross
any one else have any Ideas as to what was wrong?

Thanks for any input
Liz

I'd be letting that guy know that you have friends and that there is nothing worse than bad publicity by mouth!!!!

Do you believe that the people did nothing, NOTHING about the bad lobsters. The only respose we got was "we sell live lobsters no refunds" and walked a way from us. It took every bit of self control not to throw the gross lobsrers at him. if he couldn't refund us at least an apology would have been nice.
I know other people have worst problems then our bad lobsters, but i just needed to vent.
Thanks

Thanks ladies, my hubby is taking them back to the market tommorrow. I hope he can get our money back. I want to go but I have to work, I can be "the squicky wheel" better than he can but we'll see what happens.
Not buy lobster in months that have a "r" in them? That only leaves May, June , July and August, but I guess those are really the best months to buy it.
I have heard about raising things like beef locally then shipping it across the country and we are eating beef from other places so it proberly is the same with lobsters, thats something I'll have to have hubby ask about when he brings them back.
I'll let you know what happens

Ewww! Liz! You poor thing! I don't know what would cause that, but I do know that the older the lobster, the bigger it will be. And the bigger it is, the tougher and less sweet the meat. We always got them small (about 1 - 1 1/2 pounds) off the docks when I was a kid growing up in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and they were always sweet and tender. Here they have what I like to call "Three Mile Island" lobsters - they're huge (brought in from Australia or something), and chewy and tough... and most people only eat the tails here, which completely blows my mind... If it smells at all or if it looks wrong, don't eat it. From what I have always been told, shellfish like lobster cannot "sweat" out any toxins - they carry them with them their whole lives - so I would think the bigger, the older, the more unhealty the lobster... but that's not something I can say for sure, it's only family folklore that I was told growing up (And remember, my family peels mushrooms! LOL!). I think Kelly's right, though - please save what you can and bring it back to the store and demand a refund. And you know what else I was always told as a kid - lobster you'd buy in New England wouldn't be from local traps - it would be imported from the South, and then ours would be exported to other places. I forget why, but I think it was because the lobstermen could fetch a much better price when exporting their catch. So chances are, you weren't buying fresh, local lobster to begin with, and they could have been old or sick and dying when you got them (especially if they had been sitting in a market tank for a while). You might want to inquire about that when you go back to the market - just for future reference. I'm so sorry your special meal was ruined. Don't let it sway you from lobster forever, though... Go down to the nearest docks (The lobstermen should give you a deal off the boat rather than buying from the fish market - you may even be able to barter for them! My dad always bartered mechanic work for fresh seafood - it was a great thing!), go fresh, go small, steam in a big pot, crack em open and have lots of drawn butter for dippin'! It's worth another shot, for sure! - Nini

Geeze...I thought you were only supposed to buy seafood (crabs, lobsters) in months WITH and "R"...Ugghh!
Sorry your dinner was a disappointment. It's awful to look forward to a treat (an expensive one at that) and have it be a let down. You should take the lobsters back to the store and ask for a refund or replacements. Good Luck.

Well, Liz, when I lived in Maine, I remember that we grew up with the "law" "Do NOT buy lobster in any month with an "R" in it. I think it has to do with the molting or something. Anyway, your post just reminded me of that.
