Hey all! I read a reference to the "dishwasher's prayer" in something or other, recently... it sounded like it's been around for awhile, maybe 50 years or so? (although that doesn't sound as long ago as it would to some of us, to me anymore! ha) The context was that it was printed out and placed near the sink... where we stand and dream and think and ponder, and maybe learn a thing or two?!

I googled, and found these two:

“Thank God for dirty dishes, they have a tale to tell.
While other folks go hungry, we’re eating very well.
With home and health and happiness, we shouldn’t want to fuss.
For by this stack of evidence, God’s very good to us.”

The Dishwasher’s Prayer
by Elise Hooper

As I begin my morning chore
And dishes start to clink,
I ask that You would join me here
Next to the kitchen sink.

I’m feeling cross and kind of rushed.
There’s so much here to do!
This job is never ending and
There’s sweeping to do, too!

When all my heart cries out against
This work I do each day,
I pray that You would bless me
In a very special way.

Grant me a smile as I begin,
Infuse my heart with joy.
Guide me as I clear the plates
And wash where little boys
Left fingerprints for me to wipe
And crumbs to sweep away.
May I remember as I serve
My loved ones every day
That You began this fine display of service to your friends,
And most of all, You serve me, too-
And Your work never ends.

Today as I am standing here
My hands in sudsy water,
I’m thinking of a time when I’ll
Be standing with my daughter.

Shall I be cross and pouty then?
For surely she will see
That Mama has a sour face
And she will mimic me.

Shall I wish to be somewhere else?
Or shall I sweetly do
The work my family makes for me?
Oh yes, I’ll serve them, too.

So as I wrap my apron round
And put away the food,
I pray that You would sit and rest
And let me serve You, too.

For I know that when I do these things
For those surrounding me,
I’m also doing them for You-
Ah! You have helped me see.

Anyone else have a Dishwasher's prayer??

And I thank you Lord for the physical ability to do these chores because it means that I am healthy and I am most grateful!!!

Thank You For This Sink of Dirty Dishes
(www.prayerispowerful.blogspot.com)
Lord, thank you for this sink of dirty dishes; we have plenty of food to eat. Thank you for this pile of dirty, stinky laundry; we have plenty of good clothes to wear. And I would like to thank you, Lord, for those unmade beds; they were so warm and comfortable last night. I know that many have no bed.

My thanks to you, Lord, for this bathroom, complete with all the splattered mirrors, soggy, grimy towels, and dirty lavatory; they are so convenient. Thank you for this finger-smidged refrigerator that needs cleaning inside and out. It has served us faithfully for many years and has enough food in it for several meals. Thank you, Lord for this oven that absolutely must be cleaned today. It has baked so many things over the years.

The whole family is grateful for that tall grass that needs mowing and the lawn that needs raking; we all enjoy the yard. Thank you, Lord, even for that slamming door; my kids are healthy and able to run and play.

Lord, the presence of all these chores awaiting me says that you have richly blessed my family. I shall do them cheerfully and I shall do them gratefully.

Alee - I hear you, that's why I needed it too!!!

I think we all *need* the good reminder, it's hard having a servant heart sometimes!! Which is crazy when you look at our blessings, but, there it is...

Thank you for posting that TJ! It was an excellent reminder right when I was starting to get grouchy at the cleaning I have to do today.

Miss you! Hope to see you soon!
