We have a mulberry tree here in Olympia, and a farmer at the farmers market has a bunch. He sells the berries .They are so good, but they are hard to explain the taste.
They really stain your hands, my 4 yr old Grandson loves them but is sure a mess when he finishes eating bunches. LOL
They would make great jam, havent made any because between us and the birds I cant get enough to make a batch. :)
The tree is also just loaded this year, but not ripe yet. all you lucky people that already have ripe stuff!!! my mouth is watering, were still planting gardens here, and the weathers been rainy

Hey Catherine,
Glad to hear mulberries grow in Canada! I've lived out west my whole life, and never seen one. I must travel east!

I have a HUGE mulberry tree over my chicken coop and yard. The birds have been enjoying them, but I have no idea how to go about harvesting them for myself. The tree is too big to shake anything out of (I've never seen a mulberry tree as big as this one) and even if I could they'd fall into the chicken yard. Eeew! I might just wait for the rasberries to ripen.

Mulberries sure do grow in Canada! I've got a mulberry tree just outside my front door, and it sure looks like there's gonna be a bumper crop this year! Yummy! Can't wait to try a few recipes with them babies!

Hi Alison! Mulberries resemble small raspberries and they grow on trees not bushes. They turn a real dark purple color when they are ready. Taste...hmmm...they are not real sweet hard to explain...if you do a search for mulberry trees on google I am sure you could find a picture. If I knew how to post pics on here I would take a pic of ours.....does anyone know how to post pics to the board? Anyway, hope that helps a little have a great day!

Hi Everyone,

I have a silly question....what are Mulberries? I've heard of them before, but none seem to grow in Canada. What do they taste like? How big are they? Are they like juneberries? (We call juneberries "Saskatoon berries" in Canada)

Hi again! This is the recipe I tried and it wasn't bad. I think I would like it more if it had a full pie crust on the top, but its pretty good! Enjoy!
Berry Cobbler
1/2 cp butter
1/2 cp sugar
1 egg
1 cp flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 - 3/4 cp milk (i used a 1/2 cup)
2-3 cps of berries (i didn't measure just filled the pan up to half)
3/4 cp sugar
1 Tblspn flour

Mix the first 6 ingredients together - add milk to consistency. Put berries in 9x13 inch pan to 1/2 full. Sprinkle sugar on berries. Sprinkle 1 Tblspn flour; dot with butter. Pour batter over top. Bake at 350 degrees for approx 25 minutes. (Mine needed 35 minutes until top was turning brown)

I went out this morning and shook a 1/2 bussel of berries from my trees. I pulled a recipe for "berry cobbler" off a cooking site...its in the oven right now! We'll see how it goes...if its a "winner" I will post the recipe! Erika, I'm assuming that you could make jam from them. I'm wondering though...they are not as sweet as raspberries or even blackberries and the jam recipes I have seen already have a ton of sugar in them....I don't know maybe worth a try! Please post results if you give it a try! I'll keep you all posted too!

We've got trees getting ready also. Can you make jelly or jam out of them? I don't think I've ever seen any for sale anywhere, but I never really looked either.

I made a mulberry pie for the county fair when I was in high school and was awarded a "state fair blue" ribbon. They didn't have a category for it at the SF, so I didn't make one for it. Seems to me I just added sugar and lemon juice to the mulberries and that was all, put on a cut lattice top crust and it was YUMMY!!!

Our former pastor had a huge mulberry tree in his yard, but I never did get enough from his tree to make a pie. I sooooooo miss having mulberry trees at my disposal like I did growing up on the farm in Kansas!!!
