I had 5-6 dozen jars full of home canned items that were sitting in boxes on the back porch waiting to go to their more permanent home. We had this huge winter storm come through with loads of snow and freezing temperatures. I went out last night and found some (if not all) the jars frozen. Anyone ever had this happen? Do you think the food is ruined?

THere was fruit, tomatoes, meat, jam, etc. A wide variety of stuff. It's all in boxes, nothing stuck to the shelf at this point because it was all out on the back porch stacked on the table. I may call my friend and see if she wants to just come get it and put it in her freezer.

hey there, i have had this happen. if you pick them up too soon while froze sometimes the bottoms stick if they are stuck to the shelf definately wait to remove. i find its the very botton of jar that breaks away. the whole bottom. was there plenty of expansion room in the jars? what was in the jars. this matters. some things can hold up better. fruits would maybe be ok. meat green beans tomatoes a real concern for health. so sorry it happened. just my thoughts sherrye

Wow. I hate that for you! First, it's hard for me to believe that anything could freeze right now because it was 80 degrees here today. Second, I know that you must be sick over it. All that hard work! Hopefully, it will thaw out and the jars won't be broken and you can still enjoy the fruits of your labor. Have a blessed Thanksgiving!!

Uuggh! don't you just hate that Angie?
Hope you can salvage them.
I usually store several cases of water out in the garage for emergency...and last year the bottles froze,,,so thank goodness I remembered this year and had put the water inside in the pantry before we had that delightful blizzard....
Oh & I have ruined many a tomatoes by leaving them in the garage & they froze which makes them mush & have to be tossed out.
Don't ya hate it when you waste food,,,or should I say when Mother Nature wastes food....

For right now, they are all still frozen. No since moving them at this point. I will find out when I move them if anything actually broke.

So long as the jars don't break you're okay. The food will be mushier than normal as it has froze and thawed, but should be fine.

I would think that as long as the jars didn't crack or break it would be ok. I have had that happen before but usually the jar breaks! You are lucky they didn't! Check to make sure none of the seals were broken.
