Hi girls! Do any of you have a good old recipe for War Cake? My aunt says she loved it as a little girl during WWII, and she has lost her grandmother's (my great-grandmother's recipe) heirloom recipe. I went searching online, but there are so many variations to choose from. I'm really hoping one of my farmgirl sisters can help by sharing your family's recipe! Thank you! - Nini

as far as WWII for the cake--my recipe is from before that, as my grandpa was a grown man and served in WW II. So this was probably a cake from the depression era. (the one posted above)

Thank you, Sheila! I don't know it does sound similar to what she described, but I'm not sure. I'm going to call her tomorrow. I'm sure she will be thrilled. I really, really appreciate it. It does sound yummy - especially with the cream cheese frosting!! :) Thanks again! - Nini

Nini--maybe it's the cake we make that we call "Boiled Raisin Cake" it's my favorite cake of all time, especially when topped with cream cheese frosting. My great-grandma used to make it for my grandpa and his friends when he was in school. Here's the recipe, if you want to try it :)

Boiled Raisin Cake:
Boil together 1/2 pkg of raisins and 2 c. cold water. Let cool a little. Mix with 2 c. sugar, 1 c. shortening, 2 tsp cinnamon, 2 tsp nutmeg, 2 tsp baking soda, 2 tsp salt, 4 c flour, and 1/2 tsp cloves. Bake at 300 for 45 minutes

(I usually have to bake it for over an hour, and at like 350 or 375. You'll know when it's done.) It is SOOOOOOOOOOO delicious and moist and stays great for days. I do like it with cream cheese frosting on top! ;)

Hope this comes close to what you're looking for!
