Does anyone brine their turkey? I did a few years ago. I raised a few turkeys and butchered one for Thanksgiving. I put it in a brine mixture and left it a few days. It really was good.

Now I can't remember all the ingredients I used. I know it's water, salt, sugar, bay leaves, rosemary, thyme and juniper berries. I think that's all. I googled and didn't see that particular recipe. I guess I'll just throw it all in a cooler and see what happens.

Thanks, Jonni. I need all the help I can get here! And that looks good too. Well, so that's 3 turkeys I'll have to brine now. Yep, I also think Bobby Flay's going down next week. There's no way he'll win up against her. I can't wait to see it now.

Sharon, that looks good. I might just have to do another turkey for Christmas. Thank you for the recipe.

And for the link to the apple cider brine, Sarah. They both look really good. Thanks.

Jonni, I just went to PW and didn't see a recipe. She's going to be on Throwdown with Bobby Flay next Wed. at 9:00 PM. A full hour of Thanksgiving cooking. I know where I'll be. He does a really good brined turkey.

I am not looking forward to the butchering but it has to be done. I am looking forward to the nice fresh Bourbon Red goodness though. I think they will be around 15 pounds or so. They are not huge and that's ok. But it has to be done. I wonder if we should go ahead and do it this weekend and freeze it or wait til a few days before Thanksgiving. Any suggestions for that?

I've used Alton Brown's recipe before, but this year I'm using one that is brined in Early Grey tea and lemon and then grilled on the gas grill. Yum! I can't wait for Thanksgiving!

Hey Kris, the Pioneer woman posted her "favorite turkey brine" recipe a few days back. Might want to check it out. I don't brine a turkey, because someone else is always making it :) If I did make one, I would, for sure.

I've never tried brining a turkey before so I think I'll try it this year. Thanks for the link, SaraJ that looks like a great one to try and Sharon your recipe looks like a keeper as well; guess I'll have to flip a coin to help my decision.

Hey Kris,

Here's a recipe that my honey and I came up with :)




Turkey Brine

1 cup coarse Sea Salt
½ cup Brown Sugar
1 Tablespoon Dried Orange peel
1 Tablespoon Dried Apple Bits
1 Tablespoon Dried Cranberries, finely chopped
2 teaspoons Black peppercorns
½ teaspoon Thyme
½ teaspoon Sage
½ teaspoon Rosemary
1/8 teaspoon Garlic Powder
3 shakes Crushed Red Pepper Flakes

Combine contents of Turkey Brine to one gallon of boiling water.
Cool thoroughly and refrigerate until chilled.
Place thawed turkey, brining mix and an additional gallon of water
Into a large container so that the turkey is submerged.
Keep refrigerated or on ice for 12-24 hours.
Before roasting, rinse well with cold water and pat dry.


We have sometimes added a bit of Pure Maple Syrup.


**We have found that slow-roasting a turkey also helps make a great tasting turkey :)
