My Mam Maw died years ago and took her recipe for chow chow with her. This fall I have an abundance of green tomatoes. My Mom remembers green tomatoes and cabbage were part of the mix.
Anyone have a recipe?

Corie, the chow chow I had was coursely chopped cabbage, bell peppers, green tomato, and onion. More or less that was the ingredients. It is not chopped so fine but kinda similar to dill pickle relish or sweet pickle relish. Much chunkier texture. Here in Texas pinto beans and cornbread are food of the Gods and it is all the better with a spoonful of chow chow on the beans. But also can be added to other peas and beans. it has a sweet/sour/hot mix of taste. Where the name came from I haven't a clue. I think it is a country thing though and I knew the girls on here would have an idea what I was talking about.

BTW, it was made in the fall after my mom was in school. She remembers her dad coming in with 3 or 4 big heads of cabbage and her step mom going to the garden to gather green tomatoes. Then she cleared of the kitchen table and piled it all up on the table and started chopping. At that point the little ones went to school and when they came home the job was done. So she has no memory of the rest of the process.

I am sorry to barge in, but other than a breed of dog what on earth is chow chow? It sounds like one of those things of romantic childhood memories!

I grew up with cabbage based chow chow,(texas family) but was amazed to find that the Amish put vegetables in theirs, not cabbage. I am talking about, green beans, carrots, peppers, squash pieces, cucumbers etc. The brine is that of a bread and butter pickle. It was totally delicious, and I have the recipe in a book I bought while visiting there some odd 15 years ago. If anyone is interested just send me a note. I haven't made it that way, this year I did try green tomato relish which is very similar to MJ's chow chow, just no cabbage in it.

Thanks, Carol, that was a great article. I do not think ours had the hot peppers in it. I really think she just threw together all that was left in the garden. Some put cauliflower in it but she did not. I have kind of given up on duplicating hers exactly. I told everyone they might have to settle for LaVonna's Chow Chow instead. I just have to come up with the recipe.
You know, it said in the article about planting the tomato too late in the spring? I have always felt that when it gets really hot here they slow down. Almost to a stop. All except those little yellow pear kind. Then we get rain and cooler temps in September and there they go! Blooming and producing like crazy. Our first frost date is mid November.

Hi girls.
MaryJane recently wrote an article about green tomatoes for her nationally syndicated newspaper column, and it includes a recipe for chow-chow. Here's a link to the column at the Salt Lake City Tribune:

Thanks!

Thank you, Linda, for the recipe I will make some next weekend. Do you know how much this makes?

Judy, I will appreciate all recipes. I was never around when she made the Chow Chow and my mom has no memory of the process.

Lavonna, as soon as I can dig it out, I'll email you my Granny's chow chow recipe. Good memories of cranking the handle of the grinder while she made it.

Lavonna, I emailed you the recipe. Today for lunch we had baked Chicken and Purple Hull peas with cornbread, Salad, my grandkids were here for the weekend and they love the green tomatoes pickles. They said to tell you "Its the best" they love them also along side of burgers or sandwiches. Yep, I know that it is a long drive for you, but I hope that if Jennifer or any of them get something going, I hope that you might be able to join in. Well will go get my bath, and settle down for the evening. Huave a good week Farmgirl #946 linda

I think I can use any green tomato recipe. These are my spring plants and they are just going crazy with production. And will not be ripe by frost. So they go to waste or I need to have plans for them.
I loved the campout too. I was ready to go again this week. Next time I am going to be sure and stay longer. It was so nice to meet everyone.

Hey LaVonna, I don't have a chow chow recipe, but just wanted to say Hello! Really enjoyed getting to know you at the campout. I really had a good time. I do however have a recipe that my family loves it is made with green tomatoes, It is called greem tomatoes pickles. It is like a relish goes with peas, or sandwiches, or any thing. I have been making it for about 17 years. If you are interested I will be glad to share it with you. Have a nice day!
