Here is a pie that my Granddad loved =) Being autumn and all, I am going to give this old timey southern favorite a try...I haven't had it in years. My grandpa always made it and it was delish! Give it a try!

I am going to try to do Sunday theme suppers all autumn and winter. Since my sweetie is taking a few days off this coming week. I think I'll do a true southern dinner with this pie as the crowning piece

OLD FASHIONED SWEET POTATO PIE

2 cups cooked, mashed sweet potatoes
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup butter softened
2 eggs, separated
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1/4 cup sugar
1 unbaked 10-inch pastry shell

Directions:
Combine sweet potatoes, brown sugar, butter, egg yolks, spices, and salt in a large mixing bowl; beat until light and fluffy. Add evaporated milk; mix just until combined.

Beat egg whites until foamy; gradually add sugar, beating until stiff. Fold into potato mixture. Pour filling into pastry shell. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes; reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake an additional 45 to 50 minutes or until set.

Annika, I like your idea. Sunday should be about family and what better way than to spend time together over the dinner table. You're right Thanksgiving should be a lifestyle not just an excuse to eat turkey. We have so much to be thankful for in this country even now when the economy is not so hot. Maybe we should all take your idea to heart and do our own Sunday Suppers.

Hello Everyone,
Does anyone have a recipe for Buttermilk Custard? I have a recipe for Buttermilk Pie. But I am looking for a recipe for Buttermilk Custard. My sister is biting at the bit for this recipe. She saids there is a little elderly lady that brings it for church gatherings. My sister loves it she said. But the little lady refuses to give her the recipe. She said it has been in her family for generations and she does not give out her family recipes. Isn't she funny!!!! Anyways I told my sister I would try and run down the recipe for her. No luck so far!

Audrey, I feel like we never slow down any more and seldom have a real meal together....we eat out too much, so my themes for Sunday dinners are all going to be about slowing down and savouring the food.

I want to place emphasis on quality of food and trying new things some Sundays and having old favorites on Others =)

I want to start the meal with an appetizer and some conversation...move on to the meal and eat slowly, rather than just stuffing our faces, like we do so much of the time darnnit! Being thankful for our food and just unwinding a bit before another busy week hits. Let dinner settle a bit and have a wonderful homemade dessert together. I'm challenged in all of this because my Andrew is diabetic and so I have to really juggle the carbs to give us a balanced full meal.

Thanksgiving shouldn't be just a one day celebration, but in all things that this good earth gives us. I think I am headed towards the slow food lifestyle...more home cooking and simple, gentle Sunday afternoons and evenings in the kitchen. We all just gogogo! any more.

So...it's back to slow Sunday dinners for us!

Yum! This sounds like a fabulous recipe. What are you going to include in your "Sunday Suppers"? I like that idea, we should all go back to having these with our families.

I love Sweet Potato pie, Annika! My recipe is from my Nanny's mammy (my father's mother's nanny)...it dates from about 1868 or so, just after the Civil War. It gets rave reviews!

Have fun with your southern meals--if it weren't 90 degrees here this week, I might go for my own southern comfort food, but as it is, I'll still eat some salads :)
