I'm so excited they came out so good. The only kind of bad thing is if you're husband is like mine, he'll want tortillas all the time LOL!! I'm glad they worked so well for you!

Okay - made your wonderful tortilla recipe last night and it was a big hit! My husband said (before they were cooked) they were the prettiest tortillas I had ever made. Tastey too :-)!!! I took pictures last night and I need to get them onto the computer and then send them off to you. Again, thank you again for sharing!!!

I can't wait to try these. Ever since we have moved to NM, I always have tortillas but have never made any myself. Thanks for sharing the recipe!

I will gladly take pictures for you..."when" I make them :-). I thought I had 1/2 a bag of the flour but alas barely a cup. I will make them this weekend and let you know!

Renia - I have never made them with self rising flour so I will have to try that! I have many recipes for tortillas and I make different ones depending on what I am serving...

I have been trying to find a good Indian Fry Bread recipe like a resturant serves in Taos - I have tried several but they have never come close. I think also it might be the oil they fry them in and again tried several and still not the right taste.

Thanks for sharing your recipe and blog - will be back often to check what is cooking...

Oh Rasberry, I'm so excited!! I'm so glad this brought you a bit home. Please please let me know how they turned out. Hey if you have any pics can we place your experience on my blog???

My Mom, my sister and myself all make tortillas. These pictures and post are of my mom. I could not get the recipe right. I have never used a recipe and that's how I learned. I have tried several times to write it down for other people but with no sucess. So I brought my mom in to get the recipe right. Her tortillas are a little bit better anyways!!

thank you for sharing your experience, I'm so happy you found a piece of home. For me food is home, they just don't have new mexico food anywhere else. Please keep in touch.

I am so very excited to try this recipe. My Aunt is a native indian from New Mexico and I would swear your hands are hers...or maybe it is just that I have NEVER seen another person using the wee rolling pin before like my Aunt Tina! Her recipe was in her head from her mother and grandmother and in her hands. She and my cousing sort of wrote down the recipe after my cousin had kids and wanted to make "the" tortillas...when they visited a few years ago Susie and her then 3 year old daughter made us grandmother's tortillas. I did not have the heart to tell them they were not the same.

My husband's father is from Equador. His parents meet there while his mother was a missionary. His family was very wealthy and eating tortillas (not what they called them) was beneath them but his nanny (again not the right word) made them for Olmedo as a treat :-). The recipe was passed on to his wife as a wedding gift from the nanny. There the recipe stayed. As there were no girls (4 boys) it was thought the large jar would ALWAYS be full of the mix. My mother-in-law died suddenly and along with other questions the boys have wondered over the years...the question of what was in the mix is a hot topic.

I will try out your recipe tomorrow to go with smoked brisket :-) Thank you so much for sharing your recipe with us. I have tried SO MANY tortilla recipes it is not even funny. The one I use now is from a cooking school in Ireland if you can believe it. It is very good. I usually make up a couple of batches and freeze them for future use. I do not roll them out as I have a wonderful electric tortilla press that pre-cooks them while flattening them - then they go on the comal (sp) or cast iron griddle on the grill. I will let you know over the weekend how the recipe works out for us :-) Thanks again!

Thanks everyone for looking!

I don't have a corn tortilla recipe, well a good one anyways. I have never really found a recipe that worked. They don't come out right for some reason. I guess it's one of those lost arts. I'd sure like one. They just don't have good corn tortillas here in kansas. If anyone has a recipe I'm willing to try it out!

Oh yum! I remember my mother used to make tortillas by hand since you couldn't buy them like you can today. She cheated and had a tortilla press, rolled the dough in a ball and placed in the middle of the press between two sheets of wax paper, brought the top down, pressed and voila! Nice round tortilla! Don't know what happened to her press, bet it's still in the deep dark recesses of the cupboards. I need to get a "tortorilla" so I can make these, oh wait, I bet I can use my electric griddle. And thanks for the Spanish lessons too! Believe I'll also try your taco recipe. Do you have a recipe for corn tortillas?

I make something similar but with plain flour and just call it flat bread or unleavened bread. Sometimes I put herbs and garlic in it and other times a little sugar and then make like cinnamon toast with it. My hubby loves it and its so easy.

Thanks for sharing your recipe, I will try it with self rising flour.
