Posted - Sep 12 2010 : 12:49:34 PM Hey girls :) All of this talk about favorite Fall candies reminded me of this link I found:
http://theurbanhousewife.blogspot.com/2007/09/homemade-vegan-candy-corn-happy.html
I will be trying these this week sometime for my honey :)
Okay, I tried these yesterday.
They were pretty time consuming.
I followed the recipe to a 't' with the exception of using regular corn syrup and I used nonfat powdered dry milk instead of the soy. I found that the kneading color into the candy dough was the hardest part ( I needed to use more color ) and took about 10-15 minutes per color to knead. The dough hardened quickly (even covered) so I placed in the microwave 5-10 seconds to soften up and then it worked fine. Mine did not look as nice as the ones pictured on the website :)
The verdict: They were okay. I wouldn't make them again unless my honey asked me to. The taste was different, more like a fondant. If I were to make them again I would use half the amount of corn syrup and substitute the other half with honey. I would also use clear vanilla extract if I wanted to achieve a yellow color like the storebought.
