Hi, all. After not sprouting for too many years, I pulled out my jars and lids the other day, and opened a seed catalogue.Happy with the choices, but--washing/soaking in bleach solution to kill E.coli is now recommended by the seed company. While I do want to avoid E.coli at nearly any cost, I do not use chlorine bleach, and am loathe to eat it or feed it to my family in any quantity at all. Any thoughts?

After reading this post last night, I pulled out my "johnny's seed" catalog . The product info states that the seeds are untreated and have tested negative for both e coli and salmonella.

I've been thinking about sprouting lately and was looking at a website called sproutpeople not too long ago. Their website was overwhelming but I remember reading something about treating sprouts. I think they said that most of problems have to do with the sprouts being scratched when they're processed. Anyhow, they might have more information if you're interested.

And, we used to drink raw milk and eat raw-milk cheese, delivered to the door by the dairy, well into the '80's. Nobody got sick, and we ate raw eggs, too, though I'm picky about that now. Someday we'll have chickens, and then it's going to be real eggnog again!

Thanks, all. That's how I was inclined. My mom sprouted stuff in the '60's, I sprouted, and fed them to my kids when they were little, and if that supplier is so concerned, perhaps I'll look elsewhere.

I never bleached mine, either.
I got a little sprout jar for my 15th birthday, circa 1984. So far, no bleach = no problemo! Then again, I drank raw goat milk when I was pregnant.
I'm just a regular ol' rebel, LOL!

O.K. this is a new one on me. I have been sprouting for more years then I care to count. Maybe, if you use the wash that we use on fruits and veggies might be the solution. I will be watching this thread closely because I was just going to start another round of sprouts this weekend.

That's kind of what I think... and yet, it was Territorial Seed Co., who seem more reputable and 'local' than a huge corp. Also, having suffered through a bout or two of food-borne awfulness in Mexico and at home, and knowing some of the really awful possible outcomes, I am a bit nervous.

Boy those seed companies are in the same boat as any other business in this litigation-happy America - anything to cover their bums! *sigh*

I don't pre-sterilize my seeds and I use a sprouter quite often... who wants to eat bleach??! Possibly using a mild bleach solution to sterilize the sprouter itself every so often, but the seeds themself?? Sheesh!!
