Hello all.
Today the Hubby and I took a trip into the mountains to pick chokecherries to make jam and syrup.I found a group of sarvis berry trees.
I had heard of sarvis berries (also spelled service berries)but had never picked them. YUMMY I had no idea what I had been missing !
I picked enough for a batch of jam but tonight I combined brown sugar ,butter ,oats a little flour and a dash of cinnamon. I pressed half of the mixture in a pan. simmered the berries in a simple syrup with a little vanilla till thick then poured on top of the oat mixture. I sprinkled the remaining oats on top and baked for about 20 min.. I topped with vanilla ice cream . It was soooo good !
I will be picking them again !

Here in Canada we call Service berries "Saskatoons." When I lived in Alberta we had saskatoon bushes in my backyard! They make terrific pies, jams...there are some good recipes on this site:

Hey Susan, have never tried them but a few years ago my husband and I went on a quest looking for some. Glad you found a bounty.

A book you may want to consider getting is:

The Rocky Mountain Berry Book by Bob Krumm

It shows all of the wild edible berries from the Rocky Mountains and has recipes too!
