I also have fond mem ories of mom's home made donuts.

Does anyone have a recipe for baked, not fried donuts?

Brenda- whereabouts in the north country was your childhood camp? My hometown is in the north country in St. Lawrence County.

Ooops, yes Mel 1/4 cup of water. April I do not know about butter. These are old recipes when everyone had lard or that stuff in a can and butter was to expensive to use. I use an organic shortening made from palm and coconut oil. No trans fat. I just wonder since butter melts much quicker if that would make a difference. Let us know if you try it. They might be better.

I used to make cake donuts anad shake them in a papper sack with sugar and cinnamon. The kids loved them. I suggest you get them all cut out before you start frying with paper to drain them on because it doesn't take long. I was always afraid to let the kids help because of the hot grease. My brother was burned as a child when he pulled a coffee can of hot bacon grease onto his chest. Some were third degree burns. It took me a long time to learn to cook meat because I was afraid of it.

Can you use butter instead of shortening?

I love doughnuts!

Jane,
Thanks for posting that recipe, I may try it today too!
When I was young and we would go stay at my gramma's and grampa's camp in the North Country, my uncle and Aunt had their camp next door. My Aunt Doris would make donuts every other day or so, and my cousins and I were allowed to have ours with coffee, even though we were just kids. The donuts were the best I've ever had. Unfortunately when my Aunt died, my youngest cousin became a recluse of a sort, on drugs, and has all her moms recipes with her. Her husband won't let anyone near her or their house, so the recipe is gone for ever. :(
Yours sound delicious! :)

2 packages yeast
1/4 warm water
1 1/2 cups lukewarm milk(scaled and cooled)
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
2 eggs
1/3 cup shortening
5 cups flour
dissolve yeast in warm water. Add milk, sugar, salt, eggs, shortening, and 2 cups of flour. beat on low scraping bowl 2 min. stir in remaining flour until smooth. cover and let rise until doubled (60 min). Roll dough on floured board about 1/2 inch thick. cut and let rise until doubled (30 min) heat oil to 350 degrees. Fry until brown then flip. One min each side. drain. Eat plain or glaze. I make a big batch and freeze them. But you have to freeze them before anyone knows you made them or there will be none to freeze. I love fresh doughnuts.

Jane, I just went on your blog and read about your ordeal with your babies! Heartbreaking to lose them....I'd be a nervous wreck! You're a wonderful "mama" to all those critters and even though they can be naughty, I know they love you!! Sigh.......Hugs, Lin

Looking in some cookbooks for doughnut recipes to share!

Would you like a raised or cake doughnut recipe? And can I come over when you make them?
