Ok, so I located a local dairy (woohoo!) and all they offer is raw milk. I brought it home and of course I had to rip the lid off and taste it. It is delicious! BUT, here is the thing. My kids LOVE to drink milk and, since I didn't do the milking, well....I'm a little weird about it. So, I am thinking of pasteurizing it here at home for their safety.

My main question is this: the milk (of course) is already chilled, so is it still OK to pasteurize it and then re-chill it?

If I had done the milking, I wouldn't be weird about this, but anyway.

Susie,
Raw milk actually never goes bad...like past. milk does. It will sour and taste funny after a while (maybe 2 weeks or so) but it doesn't actually go bad.

We've been drinking raw milk from our herd share for five years and have never had a problem. In fact, my youngest child is allergic to pasteurized milk but is thriving on raw milk!

I have a Grade A Dairy and we have produced raw milk Jersey Cow cheese in the past. I wonder why there is so much worry over a product that is so healthy and clean (raw milk) when millions of people choose fast food and food that was produced in huge feed lots, daily. I would be much more worried if I made those choices!
We have our farm inspected, our water, our barn, our cows, our processing room. When you buy raw milk from your local dairy, you vote for us small family farmers who run a clean, healthy operation, where our animals are treated with love and respect.

We get our raw milk every two weeks (2 gal. at a time)from the co-op. Once it begins to sour, usually after the gallon has been open for 7-8 days for us, we keep it to use in baked goods, muffins, pancakes, etc....just like you would use buttermilk. Somebody said raw goes bad while store bought just smells funny~ in my reseaarch I have found it to be the opposite! If you drink or use conventional milk after the expiration date, it can make you deathly ill. Raw milk can still be used in a cooked form, or in homemade yogurt also. Hope this is helpful!

I am so glad to have found this thread. I was given some raw milk from a friend, and since here in Oregon it's legal to sell from farm to consumer, I'd like to continue with it. My husband is a bit nervous about giving it to the kids, so I think he and I will drink it for a bit, then give it to the kids. He's concerned about bacterial infection, etc. I am going to arrange a tour of the dairy next week, so he can come and ask questions too.

My question to all you experienced drinkers is this: should we gradually wean ourselves from the minimally pasteurized milk to the raw milk, or just go for it? Does it shock the system to switch?

Amanda, I had written a long response here then deleted it. But it was basically saying that the dairy has to be clean and inspected weekly to be selling raw milk. So I am sure you are safe. And we have been drinking raw milk for over 12 years now and have never gotten sick. I have bought cow milk from 2 different dairies. I have milk goats now. I love both. I will hopefully be milking my cow by next spring.

Anyway, I am so glad you found this dairy so close to you and are now enjoying all the great health benefits to drinking and using raw milk.

well i am a raw cow milker. i have one cow ready to freshen in aug. i love rae milk. real milk. if it is machine milked it does not last as long. there are many variables to quality and personal prefrences. but raw milk will go bad store bought just gets weird odd smelling. most box store milk is dried and reconstituted to have every gallon the same. just a thought. some who are lactose intolerant can use raw since the enzymes to break down lactose are live in the raw milk. happy days sherrye

Could someone tell me how long raw milk will last.
quiltin mama Posted - Jul 13 2010 : 6:17:00 PM
Please don't pasturize it!! You'd mine as well feed your kids healthy food and then just give them water to drink. Raw milk is full of healthy, beneficial enzymes. It is especially good for the needs of growing children. Our kids 12,3,2 and 8 months have always drank raw milk. Our 8mo old gets it in his homemade baby formula.
Please feel free to email me if you want to talk about raw milk further or have any questions- I would love to chat with you about it! :)

Hi Amanda, I live in MI where selling raw milk is illegal. However, we have the loophole of owning herd shares. Our farmer gladly takes any new customer on a tour of the milk house and we are always free to watch the cows being milked. Also, the farmers take extra precautions by having the milk tested with every test possible, on a weekly basis. They go above and beyond the testing process to ensure our milk is safe. They are members of their local counsel of the Westin A Price Foundation to promote raw milk & to keep up on the latest & greatest regarding raw milk, laws, etc. They feed their own children this milk without pasteurizing. Our family has never gotten sick from our raw milk.

Amanda, you had me curious, so I looked into raw milk. I have liked what I have found. I also found a local chapter of the Weston A Price Foundation near me. I have made contact with them and am lookin into the farmers they suggested. I will be visiting a few farms this week and lookin everything over to choose my supplier. I'm gonna take the plunge!

We get raw milk from a local co-op "in secret", since it is officially illegal to sell raw milk in the state of Florida without labeling it "for pet food only". (This really freaks out the in-laws!) About 100 families in our area alone drink raw, un-homogenized, unpasturized milk every day, & have for almost a decade now. As long as your dairy is clean, please consider serving it raw! The pasturization doesn't kill flavor, it kills the naturally occuring beneficial bacteria found in raw milk, like that in breastmilk, yogurt, etc. Our local homeschool science co-op teacher has done all sorts of research on raw versus today's "regular" milk, & she says they benefits are great, including a better immune system, less sinus issues, etc. Check out the Weston Price Foundation for more info....

Well, I shut my eyes really tight and served up glasses of 'raw chocolate milk' to my girls and their friend (my best friend's son). Of course, they loved it. It is so good. lol. The milking room is clean, the dairy is certified, and the dairy has been around for a loooong time.

I also believe that 'raw' milk has its benefits. I am just imagining everyone coming down with a case of E. Coli, which truthfully, is probably more likely from burger meat you get at the store. :0)

Thanks, girls, I feel better now. Lol.

We drink mostly veggie milk around here (almond, rice, hemp and soy are our favs) but do get a gallon or 2 of raw milk every month. My husband and oldest daughter love it, and if they are going to want a glass of animal milk every now and then, I'd rather it be raw cows than not. (Nobody ever enjoyed goat milk) My younger 2 drink breastmilk only, so yes, they get animal milk, ha ha ha.

And also about the reasons to drink it...many more than the flavor. I think that we kill so many of the "good things" in cows milk when its heated up and worse, when the fat is taken out. Check out this website: http://www.raw-milk-facts.com/

There are a lot of skeptics out there, mainly because over the past 50 years we have been taught that raw milk=bad milk which is totally not the case with a reputable dairy.

We do not drink as much cow milk as our friends do, but those who do consume at least a gallon a week and have over the past few years with no issues. In fact, one friend had a son (who was 9 at the time the began with raw milk) who was told by the ped that he was allergic to milk that turns out he *can* have only raw milk but not "traditionally manufactured" cows milk....Like I said, I think the heating up/fat removal kills so much good stuff.

If they are licensed and the milking room is clean, the milk comes in sealed bottles, and its cool/cold when you get it, I would have no problem drinking it and serving it to my family. One of the major points of raw milk, is that it has not been pasturized, thus killing alot of the flavor.

Yes Michele, I did go to the dairy. It is your typical 'old farmer'-style dairy with this and that laying around, but the inside where they process the milk is very clean. They are licensed to sell raw milk, which I know isn't easy to accomplish.

I'm just being weird, I guess!

I have a friend that gets milk that is chilled and then pasterizes it. So works great for her. Have you toured the dairy? Are they clean? Just some questions to ask.
