I am so excited! I called my friend up the road to see if her berries were ready and she said yes! So me and Kansas went this morning with 2 gallon buckets and we ended up picking 2 1/2 gallons of the biggest sweetest berries ever! Kansas picked over a half gallon herself. She loves them. And we probably ate a good quart while picking. We will have to go back with Chloe and Coryn and get them some.

I want at least 12 gallons in the freezer. I have been making smoothies with my kefir that are just way too good. So I might just need more than 12 gallons. I was just thinking that would be a quart a week. So yeah, I will need more than that because the grands can eat a gallon at a time when they are here.

I talked to my mom in South Ga. this morning and her blueberries are not ripe yet. That's strange. I would have thought they would be ripe down there first.

Anyone else getting fresh blueberries yet?

Kris

I have one of those steam juices and it is the best!

It has 4 parts to it, a pan for water, a sieve type thing for juice to strain out, a juice basin and a basket that holds the fruit.

Hot steam basically causes the fruit to weep juice.

It has really saved my wrist and hands from having to pulp out juice for blackberry jelly.

You can google search "steam juicer" and see what comes up. I believe the Liehman's catalog has something like this. I bought mine from a similar source that is also Amish called the 3 wisemen trading company.

these are kind of expensive...like about 110+ dollars or so, but if you do a lot of canning and need juice, it's a lifesaver!

We drove up to Mercer Orchards a couple of weekends ago and picked some blueberries but we've used them all up in muffins and pancakes. I just got the email from another Upick it farm closer to us saying that their blueberries were ready so I may round up the kids and head out for another patch!

Jennifer, it does seem like the blueberries are early. But that's fine with me. I think we will go back in the morning and pick more.

Sherry, I saw somewhere a big stainless steel contraption that steamed the juice from fruit and it came out a tube. It was very interesting. Didn't have to do anything. It did all the work for you. I would like to have one now. Just think of all the juice I could have. I am growing 6 grape vines. I know it will be a few years before we get grapes but I will be ready for them.

I live in the midst if U-pick heaven, many farms and orchards within 10-15 minute drive. The local blueberries came in last Friday 6/25 -which is early, they usually come in mid July or so. I got about 4 quards this morning and am making & freezing muffins now. And the cherries came in waaaay early this summer and are already gone - I missed sweet cherries entirely this season, got some sour ones yesterday and made jam. Raspberries came in this past week too (picked & made jam yesterday), though last year they came in late July. If this keeps up I'll be elbow-deep in tomatoes before I am ready!

Call me insane, but mid day or early afternoon are when it's least buggy for blackberries anyway. I can't stand gnats and mosquitoes buzzing in my ears! I'll use the Badger Balm bug repellent that has cinronella and swipe this in my ears and eyebrows.

I remember blueberry picking w/ the gnats too,. so wherever I end up, will have to pack the bug balm as well

Cari, I never heard of Chase either. I see now that you're by Big Rapids. Dansville is where the true story of the Burning Bed took place. Our claim to fame & not much more. :)

Anna, that's alot of berries you've picked. I still need alot more. It's so darn hot. I know I shouldn't complain, but it is. I need to go very early in the morning or later in the evening.

Ohhh you lucky girl!

Ours in NC may be ready, but it figures I was busy all weekend and will have to resume the hunt next week.

I make and sell jams and jellies and will need A LOT too. Like a 5 gallon buckets worth.....or something close to it!

Went to a great blueberry farm last year w/ a friend......drove nearly over an hour, but so worht it.

Ii'm gonna try someplace a little closer, and if that turns out bust, will try for the palce we wnet to last year.

And for wild blackberries, I have picked 120 pounds so far!

If you go will you let me know how they are this year? And if there are a lot of them. This place is huge. Several acres. And they have thornless blackberries too. I always miss them though.

Well hey there, Sarah! I have been thinking about you lately. I hope everything is ok with you.

My friend about 3 miles North of me has bushes and she sells them for $8 a gallon that you pick. There is also a blueberry farm called the Blueberry Farm on Alabama Hwy (151?) in Ringgold. They were just $6 a gallon last year. But when I went they were just about gone already. So I bet they are going strong right now. I need to get over there too. But Stephanie's are SO good. And close.

YUMMY blueberries!!! My mom in law lives west of Griffin, GA (south of Atlanta) and her blueberries are not ripe yet! Go Figure - they are ripe here in the mountains. Wonder if they are a different variety?

Lyn, where is Dansvill? Our family goes to the u-picks also. Just last night I was trying to figure out how many buckets each family member could possibly pick. Blueberries are a favorite, I can't wait for season!

(Just googled Dansville. Down by Lansing.)

Oh, yum! Living in Michigan, ours aren't ready until late-July to August. I wish I had a friend with bushes. Instead, my friend and I meet @ a u-pick with our kids. We pick together while the kids wander in and out of bushes. The u-pick owners have one very strict rule: EAT as you pick!!! Oh, we were in heaven. The kids were in heaven. They were 2, 3 & 4 years old & had the best time filling up on berries. I like the kefir idea. Hoping to get some kefir grains from my dairy farmer this weekend so I can start making my own. Blueberry kefir sounds SO good!! Can't wait!!!
