Posted - Jun 30 2010 : 07:24:50 AM well howdy all you farm girl garden nuts, i just love when goodies from the garden start coming in. we weeded yesterday and found baby beets yipee. so when i harvest lettuce i leave the root. that is if it is harvested all at once. we bring the plant whole into house wash well leave root. place in water as suggested above. i use the produce bags called i think debbie meyers bags. they are green and absorb the gasses the veggies put out. keeping the roots wet but not drowning allows the root to supply moisture to the leaf though already picked and in your fridge. i use the meyers bags for all my produce and just wash dry and reuse. just a thought happy days sherrye

Posted - Jun 21 2010 : 05:34:40 AM I have had a lot of success with this method. Cut off the loose leaf kind near the ground, or pull up and cut off the root. Place in a cup, bowl, or jar with enough water to touch the bottom of plant, but not submerge a large amount of the leaves. Place the contianer in a plastic bag and twist tie the top closed after blowin air into the bag makin it balloon-like. My dad has a large plastic bowl that covers the plant and water bowl that he has sittin on a towel in his fridge. It's the idea of cool, moisture, and no airflow dryin it out. I have a sister who uses a small cooler with ice water in the bottom and props the lettuce up in mason jars with some of the ice water scooped up in it. Then she even scoops out the water as too much melts and makes ice with it to put back in the cooler. It's a cool idea.

Posted - Jun 20 2010 : 8:45:31 PM I agree with Betty. You will be amazed at how long fresh lettuce will keep. Wilted Lettuce is a favorite summer dinner of our and uses lots of the yummy stuff.

Posted - Jun 20 2010 : 4:57:42 PM I picked from my lettuce garden about three weeks ago (for my sister who was visiting) and she says she is going to have her last salad from them tonight. I couldn't believe it! All I did was pick it and put it in the salad spinner and wash and dry it. She loves it and that's what counts.
