The only place I have ever seen a reference to Mock Turtle Soup is in "Alice in Wonderland" (or maybe it was "Through the Looking Glass"). There is a mock turtle, I think in the caucus race, and a song about it..

"Soup of the evening
Nice and green;
Waiting in a hot tureen;
Who for such dainties would not stoop?
Soup of the evening, beautiful, beautiful soooouuuup!"

Every time my mother made pea soup when we were growing up, she'd sing the Mock Turtle Soup song and dance around the kitchen waving her spoon. I have carried on that tradition, much to the bemusement of my partners and the amusement and sometimes embarrassment of my children (my eldest is just on the fringes of adolescence, when children suddenly become extremely embarrassed about the fact that they (like every other person on the planet) have actual parents, and tend to walk 10 paces ahead of their parents and try to pretend that they don't have parents, but instead sprung fully-formed from the brow of Zeus or something*).

*I can't take credit for this description of the adolescent view of parents - my mother made this observation when I was in junior high, and we were going to a school open house or something. Everywhere you looked, there were students leading the way to their homeroom or the auditorium or whatever, and parents trailing about 10 feet behind. It just always stuck with me, because it's so true.

LOL - you might come across it a lot in older (think Victorian era) novels. I remember having to go to the library in high school to research it because we just didn't have the internet back then...recently I saw it again in Alice in Wonderland while reading the books before I saw the movie :)

I've only ever heard of this once before on 'Gilmore Girls'! I thought they had made it up! LOL! I guess I'll have to try it some time.

LOL Channah, there are no turtles in it, thus the "mock." Usually, mock turtle soup is made with veal. Blech, I think I'd rather have turtle myself!

Sandy
I have a recipe that I got from our UPS driver! It is quite lengthy & I have to dig it out. Once I find it, I will post it. It is delicious, very German tasting & quite filling. I know that among other things, it calls for hard boiled eggs & a whole lemon.
Will post as soon as I can.
