Really crazy. I get emails from the farmer's market on Wed. in Chattanooga on Market St. I got one this morning saying they would be there this afternoon for an hour selling fresh chicken. I didn't want to drive all the way to town today so I called my DD Abby to see if she'd go get me a few after work. And to call me to see how much they were a pound. So she calls me when she gets there and said they are $5.50 a pound. I asked what the average weight was. She said about 1-2 pounds. I thought that was awfully small but I said go ahead and get at least 4. She calls me later and said those were the small chickens. The bigger ones were about 5-6 pounds. So she got 2 of those. So I just paid about $50.00 for 2 dead chickens! Man, they better be THE best chicken we have ever eaten. I am just sick. That's ridiculous. I could have bought about 30 meat chicks for that price and raised them myself cheaper. I know these people have to amke money but good grief!

Yes, next time I will go. If I don't get chicks first. I'm still thinking about that. And I was just reading again about how broth is so good for us in all kinds of ways. I had made several quarts of beef broth with my steer I had butchered. It is good. Now I will use every single bit of these chickens and make some good broth too. I saw somewhere someone used lemon balm to stuff a chicken with when she baked it plus a cut up lemon too. That sounds good. I just got 2 lemon balm plants so I will have some good leaves soon and will try that with one of them.

I would sure cook the bones for stock and use every single bit at that price. Hopefully they will be wonderful. Sounds like something that would happen to me.

I went and picked my chickens up today from my DD. I didn't see any gold on them anywhere. They look like regular ole chickens to me. They better be good. I stuck them in the freezer for now til I figure out what to do with them. I may have to go to a real expensive restaraunt and see what they do. Get me some ideas.

My DD has them right now. I'll get them tomorrow. I'm be afraid to cook them now. I'll probably burn them or cook them too long. I'll have to take a cooking class now. I guess I should have gone myself really. I just never though they'd cost that much. That's as much as I paid for the turkey I got for Thanksgiving last year.

I am planning on getting meat chicks but I am trying to decide what kind to get. I don't want the chicken house chickens. I want more of a hreitage breed that will not grow so fast. I am also thinking of getting a few pigs. I could have bought 2 pigs for the price of the 2 chickens. And I did have a steer put in the freezer last fall. Still have alot of that.

Karen, have you got some really good recipes for chicken?

Karen, look up Kent Flowers in the phonebook. He lives in Zebulon and we got grass-fed beef from him when we didn't have our own down there. It was priced fairly when we got it then. Hope this helps!

It used to be back in the "dark ages" when I was a kid that a good fryer hen (before all the hormones) weighed 3 lb or less. So if you got the smaller bird, you would have more drumsticks and thighs, as well as breasts. Not a bad deal.

Hey all, Just heard that feeder cattle is up 23% and chicken has risen about as much. If you can, better stock up now. By this summer beef, pork and chicken are expected to raise in price big time. Time to get out the pressure canner!!

keep searchin'-it's out there somewhere.

Oh my! That is crazy, wish I knew where to get some fresh chicken and beef around here but it would have to be reasonably priced. Kris let us know what you make with those special chickens! Blessings,Karen

$5.50 per pound, that is insane!!! Even the specialty stores don't sell organic raised turkeys for that much at the holidays, I sure hope the bones are at least gold plated, lol.
