I was given a small amount of sour dough starter with no instructions. Do you think I can follow the "Bread the MaryJane Way" instructions for it as to feeding it?

I feed my starter with whole wheat flour and water from my own spring. Now, y'all might think I'm a wee bit strange but I never had success with keeping a starter alive until this one. The gal I got the recipe from said to give the starter a name so you would remember that it is alive so my starters name is Amelia and we've been feeding each other for 2 years now and I love her dearly.

Bleached flour will kill the starter. So we use an all natural chemical free flour, and filtered water. We have kept our starter going for over a year. Some starters are more liquidy than others and so may not be best for every recipe. Our starter is thicker than Mary Jane's and we use only whole wheat flour in it. But, we use it only for sourdough breads that we are baking to sell. I think probably, either could be used in all recipes, just making some adjustments with the liquids, or adding more flour.

I would say "yes" also. BTW, I use non-organic King Arthur brand flour and it seems to work fine. I use tap water too. Don't tell!

yes is my thought. i know kris and i think another farmgirl tried with regular flour. it did not work. so has to be organic flour. like maryjanes. let us know how it works. just a thought sherrye
