So, hubby and I just got back from a two day trip to Chicago to find that a circuit must have tripped in the kitchen and everything was off...including....yes...the fridge and freezer :( I JUST went to the grocery store the day before we left too :( I'm so sad. Everything in the fridge was, believe it or not, still somewhat cold, but everything in the freezer is thawed. Maybe the cold stuff in the freezer kept the fridge from getting completely warm. Anyways, I *think* everything in the fridge will be OK, but I know that you're not supposed to re-freeze stuff in the freezer, right? Or is that just with meat? I had 3 lbs of ground beef that I plan on just browning up and putting in the freezer for taco days, but the stew meat will have to be cooked too. Probably will use it tomorrow for Sunday dinner.

So, here's my question. What should I do with everything else that thawed in the freezer? Like frozen veggies, pie crusts, frozen juices? Will the frozen juices be OK to just refreeze? There are a lot of them. Ugh...this makes a good relaxing trip all become such a bummer when you come home to this :( Anyone have any experience with this? Thoughts?

Invite over the neighbors and have a big party! Ok, I'm trying to be humorous. you might be able to make some quiche or other vegetable type pies, so you use up crusts and veggies at once. On another thread someone else had the same problem and canned all the meat, if you have a pressure cooker as suggested above. Tough, good luck.

Robin, if you have the freezer room, take plastic juice bottles, fill 3/4 full of water and freeze them, then if you loose power, the frozen water bottles will help keep everything cold. Also stock up on ice chests, put all your freezer stuff in them as tightly as possible, close the lid and duct tape to make a tight seal, put it in the coolest area of your home, and they will stay frozen for quite awhile. This will also help with your frig food also. I'm sorry about your food , been there, done that.

If you have a pressure canner, make some big pots of soup & pressure can. Then you do not have to worry about the freezer!

I appreciate the feedback on this! I am always concerned about our power going off in a brownout here in the Phoenix area during the summer and what to do about the fridge full of stuff!

Just a thought Siobhan - with the veggies - not sure how many you have, but cook up a big kettle of vegetable soup - then freeze it in batches - I often make soup from frozen veggies and refreeze with success. Also with the pie crusts - each fall I make several apple pies, bake, then freeze. Then when I need a quick dessert, I thaw and warm up in a low temp oven, almost as good as fresh and no one complains. Good Luck and sorry for the tripped circuit - life is sure full of surprises, good and bad.

Thank you Diane! I am glad I won't have to lose my juices! The pie crusts are completely thawed, so I will stick them in the fridge, then. It's such a bummer, but I'm just glad that we weren't gone even a day longer or it all woulda been a total loss.

Siobhan, you are smart to cook up the meat and then re-freeze it. As for the veggies, they don't refreeze well, they get crystals and turn kind of mushy. The juices can be re-frozen. Did the pie crusts get totally thawed? If they did you can refrigerate them for quite awhile, if they didn't get totally thawed, you can refreeze them. Sorry that your fun ended like this. You might have to have a bigger breaker installed.
