I recently purchased a sprouting kit after giving in to several failed attemps at using the mason jar and screen technique. This kit is equipped with 2 plastic trays stacked one on top of the other and is much more of an aerated apparatus with less chance of contamination. I've had wonderful results with brocolli, chinese radish and mustard sprouts, but not much luck with the sun flowers.
If anyone has any tips you would like to share I would be greatful.

Thank you, MaryBeth, for your tip. I might just try this dirt method with my brocolli sprouts too, because they are so small and I have lost alot through the holes in my tray.

I have sprouted sunflowers in a cakepan in dirt and covered them with a damp paper towel but remove as soon a germination and the first start of sprouting or you will get mildew. But you have to keep them just a tad moist at first.

Sunflower sprouts are my favorite too..I am glad to know how to sprout them...was intending to try it this week. I sprout alfalfa and others in a jar with mesh lid...but glad to know not to try to do the sunflowers that way...thanks!

I put them on the window seal for some sun to up the cholophill. Your sprouts always get greener with some sun. As long as they get some sun I do not think you have to worry about all day sun. I do think they are the tastest spouts around. Also they germinate at different times so you can cut from the same tray for a week or two.

Oh Yes I sprout sunflower all the time, I love them. But first what type are you using. If they are shelled raw sunflowers you only soak and sprout about a day. They do not grow tiny plants, just a little tiny tail comes out. Anything more than that they taste terrible. If you are sprouting black in shell sunflowers then you need to sprout them in dirt. Just fill a container with soil, soak seeds for a few hours, and place on top of dirt. Keep moist but not to much because they will mold. It takes about a week to get good sprouts.
