This year I am going to do it! I have told myself for several years I was going to keep track of my preserving. This year I am doing it.
27 pints of beef stew today. The neighbor had a cow butchered and had some meat left from last season and they like my stew so they brought the supplies and jars. I love canning on shares. I get to do what I love and it doesn't cost me anything but time!

Years ago I started a Pantry Journal...then last year I started my blog and use it for recording what we put up.

You also find out that perhaps 49 pints of zucchini relish is overkill, not that I would know anything about that. I was a little enthusiastic when I first started canning:)

I did that once, kept a journal. I found that I needed to can at least 52 quarts of tomatoes and 52 jars of pickles to get through the year. Extra always got used, too. I also made sure to do 100 jars minimum of assorted fruits- pear halves, chopped up groundfall peaches, applesauce, etc. 30 or more pints of salsa were always used up! That was back in the day when we are on the farm. Sigh.

I love the journaling idea, last year was my first year with a garden so this year I can try canning. We have always been spoiled since my parents have always had a huge garden and my mom cans enough for all of us kids too. I am anxious to try it though.

My only concern now is that I will compete with myself from year to year!!! I LOVE canning and dehydrating.

I have done this for the last few years and it is such a great reference to go back too! When I can or freeze something I write down how much, the date, what it yielded, the recipe, and if there was any left in the pantry from the year before. This has also really helped me when deciding how much to plant in the garden, if I need to expand or decreese what is planted.

Also when I can a new recipe I write the source on 2 of the jar lables and put them at the back, just in case I forgot to write it in the journal. Another great thing is I can follow about when a fruit or vegitable that I might buy (peaches) is coming in season, and I can start looking for the best purchase price.

What a great idea! Never gave it a thought before and your right, you try a recipe. . get the families opinion and then, don't know which recipe it was! Thanks for posting this, I am going to get my journal started now, one for canning and one for freezing. This will help me figure out how much of what I will need to grow for use in the future too.

I've thought of doing that too, I always seem to try new canning recipes and then the following year can't remember the one I tried that we all loved/hated-sounds like a great idea.

Sounds like a great idea, I've never thought to keep track of mine. Maybe its a good thing to start for this year :) Beef stew sounds so good...
