I am planning on having "high tea" sometime soon for my girls and I am searching for a couple of decent cupcake stands.
Anyone know of a site I could go on to buy one of these? I'm stumped.

I bought one at IKEA recently for about $14 or so. I'd been wanting one for a long time now.

Hey Melody,
When my son and his wife got married in Nov 09', his bride wanted a mutlilawered cake/cupcake stand. Check online and boy are they pricey! She checked ebay, made several bids, but just couldn't afford the prices. So, I made 9 cupcake/cake stands for my DIL's wedding. Here's how: check out your local thrift stores and look for class candlesticks in clear or colored glass-any height will do (2 - 10 inches). Then find a pretty plate/platter. Use Gorilla glue to run a bead of glue aroung the top of the candlestick. Center the plate/platter on top of the candlestick and let set up for several hours. Don't drown the rim of the candlestick with glue however, because when it dries, it will dry an amber color. Gorilla glue also thickens as it dries. You can then stack the stands one-atop the other in graduated plate sizes. I would take pics to show but, my DIL gave each of her bridesmaids and several helpful friends a plate as part of her thank you for helping with the wedding. My local Salvation army always has mismatched plates and candlesticks available. In fact, I picked up 2 crustal sets, and 2 milk glass vases on 2/4/10, for $2.49. I had several old plates at home and will be making some more stands this week. These also make fast and easy gifts. You can also make them out of teacups and saucers. Just turn the cup upside down and glue the saucer on to the overturned cup.

What if you stacked cake plates? I think it is great when things do not match especially for a tea. You and your girls are going to have so much fun. What are you going to be making? |

Thank you Sarah! You are very sweet to offer me yours...They can be so expensive! But I think I am going to try Pam's idea. I have been scouting out the net and etsy to see how to set it up, but I never thought of using an upside down drinking glass or the stick-ums! I would like to try my hand at making my own with some of my vintage china plates; I have a lot of mis-matched beauties I can choose from...although a run to Goodwill sounds like a lot of fun on this blustery day!

Use a dinner plate stacked on a drinking glass turned upside down. Buy a small container of "Stick-Um" usually found in floral supply sections of craft stores or even some of that sticky stuff we used to put posters on our walls!. That way you aren't buying disposable anything or having to come up with a place to store it when you're done. Look for old pieces of china at flea markets or yard sales if you want something fancier.

I don't know if it would do for you, but I found a fantastic three tiered disposable display unit at Sam's wholesale club for just about $15.00. It consists of three graduated size styrofoam display platters of graduated heights that can be used time and again or are cheap enough to just toss if you are catering something. You can drape lace, or any tablecloth or fabric around it and it makes a beautiful dispaly for cupcakes. I did my grandaughters birthday that way and everyone just raved about the display. You might try that, it is cheap and even though it is supposed to be disaposable, it is very durable. I have used it time and again.
