I want to know the BEST way to store garlic. I keep it out.... put it in the fridge ...put in a cool area of the kitchen. It still seems to start to disintegrate. I use A LOT of garlic. This year I planted 400 so I am going to get a good amount of it. It does not freeze well... it loses its flavor when frozen. I use garlic everyday.

I dry extra garlic in the food dehydrator, it lasts forever. The first time I did it in the house, and it smelled like garlic for a long time, so now I dry it on the back porch!

Forget buns of steel, I'd rather have buns of cinnamon!

We never keep more than a head of garlic or so on hand. We have a bowl on the counter that we keep it in until we use it. One time though we had one out quite a while and we kept smelling something every time we passed a certain part of the kitchen. We didn't suspect the garlic, we had actually forgotten it was there. We checked everything and finally we found it was the garlic. It smells pretty bad when it goes - a sour, odd smell. I think if we kept more on hand we'd keep it in a cool place like the basement.

I braided mine a few years ago and it went bad~I think my kitchen is too warm as well, even being an add on from the 1940's. I feel like our basement gets too much moisture to hang things...maybe the laundry room (which was a bathroom ad on originally...and it's COLD!) :)

My mom always had a jar of whole garlic in oil in the fridge. It keeps for a long time. We always had a "garlic party" when it was time to restock the jar. We'd peel the garlic and toss it in.

Thank you for your input. I am going to try putting some in olive oil. I never do that. And I NEED A ROOTCELLAR! I guess my kitchen is to warm.Even when I hang them they only last a few months. I need them to last for a lot longed, because I am going to have around 400 bulbs. Well I guess a few for seed and some to give away but at least 250 bulbs to keep safe. lol

I hang mine as well, & have never had a proeblem with them rotting before they end up in the pot!

I hang them braided in my rootcellar, it is a cool, dark and dry place, they will keep for several months that way.
