After many years in the kitchen I re-made an important discovery today. If you are following a recipe and it says use 9"x2" round cake pans, it will not work as well if you use 9"x1 1/2" cake pans.
Actually when the batter overflows it may cause difficulties such as having to shut down the oven mid-baking to clear the room of smoke, setting up a fan blowing out a window to help with the process thus chilling your whole environment, and then trying to figure how much longer to re-cook the still-gooey-in-the-middle cake.

My Grandma had a favorite story about her friend, Mae. When Mae and her husband were newly married, they moved in next door to his family. She had a bit of a rough time with baking in particular. One morning she got an early to start with bread. It just wasn't rising. She did not want to endure another teasing session by the inlaws so she took it out behind the house, dug a hole and buried it. It was, however, a warm summer morning and later in the day someone noticed a bulge out in the edge of the field. Yep, you got it. The bread had started to rise after all.

I bet there are quite a few of us have a "trial and error" kichen story to share. How about yours?

These are hysterical!!!

The one that comes to mind is funny now, but not so funny when it happened....I was trying to be really good about putting a meal on the table for my dh and I while we were both working strange schedules. So, I made the casserole and had it in the fridge for him while I went to my 2nd job, and told him when, how, etc...to bake it so it would be ready when I got home about 9:30.

When I got home, I didn't note the wonderful "smell" I had hoped would greet me at the door. So I asked if he'd remembered...he did. So I went to the oven, but it was cold....but the temperature was on. So what gives? My little cat, Prof. Pumpkin joined me in opening the oven door and BAM!!! Out came a fireball that, luckily, dissipated across the room. It did, however, singe a little off Pump's whiskers, I noted later in the evening.

Gas ovens are great...until the don't work anymore!!!!

My grandmother got up early one morning and made my grandfather a cinnamon coffee cake. Apparently he came into the kitchen cut himself a piece and took a huge bite.....he promptly spit out the cake and bolted to the fridge for milk. In my grandmother's sleepy state she had accidentally used cayenne pepper instead of cinnamon :)

well, about 2 or 3 years ago i made my first angel food cake. i used a small pan, not knowing the mix would bake and take oven the oven,lol- needless to say, the batter baked over the edges of the pan. (luckily i used a cookie sheet underneath). of course, my husband had to eat the stuff than ran over and baked onto the cookie sheet. He said they were so good, like cookies. from that day on he called them, 'angel food run-off cookies' and that i should of made them on purpose like that from now on. Soon after that he bought me a bigger pan and i've never made those runoff cookies again.

When I was first married almost 30 years ago...my DH says he always knew when dinner was ready because the smoke detectors would go off...giggle! He was a good sport though and would eat it anyway...raw and burnt!!!Gotta love someone like that!

When I was about 16, my friend gave me a french cookbook for my birthday. We decided to try out a recipe for a capon that was roasted in brandy. My mom, being supportive went out and bought the brandy for us and told us to have fun cooking the chicken and she and my dad went out for the day. Well, we followed the recipe and poured the brandy over the bird and put it in the electric wall oven. We were sitting there chatting when all of a sudden we heard a huge "Boom". We about jumped out of our skins...we went running into the kitchen and the oven door was open. The alcohol fumes had built up in the oven and blew the door open. No fire or anything - the bird was fine and turned out great but we still laugh about the oven door to this day.

Teresa, those are great stories. I have a very similar pregnancy brain in the kitchen moment. Mine happened in about the 8th month and I was really craving some toasted hazelnuts. So, I went inside and cranked up the oven to about 475 and put the nuts in. I then went out to water the garden really quick. Meanwhile, my hubby met me out back and said we had to go pick something up from the store. He completely distracted me and I totally forgot about the hazelnuts. So, we made a quick trip to the store and came home. I didn't remember the hazelnuts until I started walking up the front walk and instantly smelled a horrible burning smell. YIKES! I ran into the house (which was full of smoke LOL) and opened the oven to find a baking sheet full of what looked like little black marbles ROFL!!!! Pregnancy brain will make you completely absent minded sometimes. I'm just glad I didn't burn down my house.

I too have had pyrex rockets, not good at all with kids and pets in the room.

When my hubby and I were first married, I was just shy of 17. We had bought this place and I decieded I was gonna cook a roast, with potatos and carrots and onions in the dish with it. I put it in the oven, noted the time (it should have been ready in about 2 hours), went on out to do as much work as i could being very pregnant ( this place was still an over grown mess). Yelled for hubby to wash up as I walked into the house and could not see for the smoke, started screaming for hubby that we had a fire, he comes running in with 2 buckets of water, drops them and starts laughing (see, I could'nt go inside, cause I was very pregnant). When I turned on the oven (we are on propane)I turned it on high (500 to get it hot), then I was supposed to turn it down to 325, guess what, I forgot. When ended up with ash and what looked like a chunk of charcoal, which the dogs did'nt even want. I burst into tears (hormones), and my sweet man aired out the house and made us sandwiches. He then proceded to tell me a story about a cooking disaster his Mama had, it was summer and she was useing the canning kitchen to make her final pies for the fair, she made blue ribbon cherry every year. When they were done and cool, she put them in the truck and headed out, ( the rest of the family were already there with their livestock for 4-h), dropped her pies off to be judged and walked over to watch her boys with their steers being judged. A couple hours later when back over to collect her blue ribbon, to find out the judge had been rushed to the infirmery cause he had broken a tooth and chocked on it and a pit. She thought to herself, "someone is gonna be embarressed", then she noticed HER pie was sitting there with one piece cut out then dropped on the ground, as she stared at it, she realized that those cherries in there WERE NOT PITTED, not a one of them, lol. Needless to say, she paid a medical bill, and never entered another pie again.

When my kids were small I got them started helping in the kitchen very young and it worked, all three can feed themselves well. However one of my first attempts still makes me laugh when I think of it. My oldest daughter was probably about 4 years old. She wanted to help make a cake so I told her to grease the cake pan and gave her a little glob of butter. She did alright. Inside and out!

OMG Cindy Lou...your posting made me laugh out loud! I can just see it :)

Hosanna, your post reminded me of a time visiting friends when a similar things happended, only it was a pyrex pie plate with lemon merange (sp) pie...you can't imagine how far lemon filling flies...not to mention it sounded like a gun going off and we ALL jumped!

I thought I had it all down pat when I got married. But I learned something new one morning:
Vintage Pyrex does, in fact, break when set on a hot eye of an electric stove. And it's glass projectiles can shoot themselves into every corner of the room. Yeah, that was a new one for me.

My worst disaster was from following a cake recipe on food network for my son's birthday party. When measuring the ingredients into my mixer, I knew something was terribly off. The recipe was supposed to be for a double layer round cake that serves 8, but here I was pouring 4 cups of flour into the mixer. I should have followed my gut because before I knew it, the mixer was so full and I couldn't mix it without the batter flowing over the edges LOL! I ended up with a double layer sheet cake. Problem was, the cake was such a moist cake that it ended up being one sheet cake with a broken to pieces sheet cake on top. It just completely fell apart, and that was minutes before party guests were to arrive, so I just iced that bad boy up and tried to cover up my mess. It actually turned out to be amazingly good and people asked for the recipe. I ended up giving out the recipe making sure to tell people to cut the recipe in half. Apparently this was a recipe from a restaurant that made big sheet pans of it and though they cut the serving amounts in half for the food network website, I guess they forgot to actually change the measurements. It sure was a disaster and a bit stressful at the moment, but I can look back and laugh now. :D
