I had a recipe but don't know where it went. I made them before. But the recipe I had was a little sweeter than I'd like. Does anyone have a recipe they'd like to share. It just sounds good today and I already have my burger thawed out. I'm going to make some buns now while I wait.

Hey Kris, I don't measure when I cook but I use brown sugar, ketchup and green bell peppers chopped small. It's a little more sweet than the stuff in the can, but the amounts are up to you to make sweeter or less sweet.

One thing I have found with my family and when friends come over is not to describe something as a substitute for something else. Like, rather than saying "vegetarian sloppy Joes" call them something different. THey are never going to taste exactly the same as the meat version, but they are very good. I think if you are trying a substitute, in your mind you are expecting a certain taste, if it doesnt meet that then you are disappointed. I think thats what I alot of people think about veggie burgers too. They dont taste like meat. But they are really good!

Im sorry, been busy. I just sautee some onions in oil or butter, when they are carmelized I add the lentils and water, cook the lentils and then add the same amount of the lentil mixture as you would if you were using ground beef. I like ours to be stiffer so I make the lentils the day before usually and put them in the fridge. Then when I want to make the sloppy joes I just reheat the lentil mixture and stir in the sauce. You can also make barbequed lentils the same way, just use barbeque sauce and serve on open buns. I found being able to use condiments that I love helped me miss meat less when I started.

Sarah, how do you cook it with lentils? I love them and am trying to cut down on meat.

We are still eating red meat, but when I made tacos the other night, I browned the hamburger and then finely shredded some zucchini and then finely chopped some mushrooms and added that to the meat mixture. It was awesome. You couldnt tell, but it tasted great and we didnt get that heavy feeling we sometimes get after eating meat. It stretched the meal out too.

Gail, my grandma used to make it with the chicken gumbo. It was really good. Must be a minnesota thing. :)

It is good with the lentils but I dont see why it wouldnt work with meat. Matter of fact I dont know where I got that recipe but I might have fudged it by adding the lentils instead of meat myself. I just dont remember, its hand written in the smudged back of my Laurels Kitchen cookbook next to "grandmas brownies" and "oven pancakes" I wish it were neatly written on a cute recipe card. Lets pretend that it is. ;p

Kristin, I make sloppy joes the same way sarah does except I use ground beef and tomato soup instead of ketchup. I'm really glad Sarah posted her recipe though. I never measure anything. :( That makes it very difficult to share recipes.

Gail, I have never seen chicken gumbo soup. I'll have to look for it and try your way, too. Thanks for the recipes.

I make mine with lentils instead of meat but this is what I use.
1/4 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon prepared dijon mustard (could use yellow)
3/4 cup ketchup
3 teaspoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce (I use the vegetarian variety)
salt and pepper

When Ive been out of ketchup, which is a lot, I use a small can of salt free tomato puree and 2 tbsp of vinegar in place of the ketchup.

Reduce the brown sugar if you want.

Kris - the following recipe may not sound like much, but trust me, my grandkids love it, and it is sooooooooooo simple and easy.

2 pounds hamburger browned with onion
1 can chicken gumbo soup
squirt of mustard
ketchup to taste (quite a bit)
