Posted - Jan 10 2010 : 5:15:57 PM I am using more and more grains: quinoa, red rice, barley, buckwheat, etc. I was told it is a good idea to put them in the freezer for 24-48 hrs before putting them in the pantry in order to kill off any bugs/weevils/moths.
Then, a friend said she just stores all her grains in the freezer. What does this do to the nutritional value of the grains, if anything?
Thank you for your help.

Posted - Jan 18 2010 : 05:24:20 AM I just posted a blog about what I've done in my pantry with grains. I've not been buying them in bulk though, smaller sizes. Want to take a look-see?

Posted - Jan 15 2010 : 10:07:53 PM I buy whole wheat berries too. Mine are stored in rubbermaid containers in my hall closet. I've never had a bug problem. Nothing fancy and I can stack them!

Posted - Jan 11 2010 : 06:09:35 AM I buy whole wheat berries. I store them in 5 gallon buckets. The extra bags go in an old non working chest freezer out in the cat room. I did buy a 50 pound bag of organic hard white wheat once a few years ago and forgot I had it.(It was in that freezer with the rest of the bags.) When I went to fill up my bucket the organic wheat had little holes all in the bottom of the bag. My chickens got some very expensive grian. I never had bugs get in the other grain, though. What does that tell ya? Also never had bugs in my buckets out in the laundry room, either.
A friend of mine uses a bag of dry ice in each of her buckets. It's supposed to take all the air out so the bugs that might be in the grain will suffocate.
