Here's my latest blooper:

Over the weekend I was in such a making mood! As my last baking event for the day, I was going to make sourdough bread. I've been using my starter for a few months now, and I love it. Well, I went to make the dough, and I realized that the ONLY flour I had was self-rising flour! So, I researched and researched what would happen if I added self-rising flour to my yeast starter instead of AP, and the only concrete answer I could come up with was to omit the salt from the original recipe-which I did.

Well, the dough was liquid. And I mean LIQUID. So, I set it in the fridge to hang out until I could get some AP flour (The nearest grocery store is 30 minutes away). Well, the next day my wonderful DH got some flour while he was in town. When I got home from work, I added in almost 2 cups of A P flour before the dough got doughy. I kneaded it and put it in the pans. At this point I usually let it rise, but, I didn't have the time to let this batch rise, so I stuck it in the oven after about 30 minutes or so.

I have no idea what happened in the process of this bread, but, it's so chewy! Don't get me wrong, it's good, but, its crusty on the ourside, and super chewy on the inside. It amazes me how the different ingredients can create such a different result!

My worst baking blooper ever? When I was a kid, I tried making my mom's chocolate chip cookies, and instead of using sugar in the dough, I used baking soda.

And my wonderful mom ate one anyway (or at least she faked it!)

My daughters decided to "surprise" me with dinner one night. On the menu was homemade mac and cheese, salmon patties and green salad. They had seen me make this enough to know how to do it, so I sat back to relax while they happily cooked away in the kitchen. It smelled delicious and I just knew that it would taste just as good. The mac and cheese was pretty good, as was the salad, but the salmon patties looked a little weird. I tried them anyway. And promptly spit them out! Instead of using wheat germ, my daughter added yeast! Both were kept in the fridge, in bulk containers, and both were clearly marked, but my daughter figured that it was all the same and just grabbed the closest. It took us a few months to be able to put salmon patties back on the menu!

Its not my blooper, (not like I've ever made one, lol), my sweet Daddy deceided to make us kids fudge, from Mamas recipe, when she was in the hospital ( she had a radical masectomy, breast cancer), any who, instead of sugar, he put in "SALT", it set up like it should, he cut us each a peice, we all ( there are 5 of us kids) and him took a big bite all at once, a spit it out all at once, i sure wish there had been a camera, cause I'm sure we ALL made horrible faces as we ran for the faucet for water, lol. Needless to say, he never tried cooking again, and swears that it NEVER happened, lol.

Weird! You're not the only one that has difficulty posting to it-and I have NO idea why! I don't know if you MUST HAVE a blogger account in order to do it or what.

I hope they turned out good-I thought they were SUPER YUMMY.

My mother-in-law taught me everything I know about cooking. Except when she was teaching me how to make biscuits she failed to tell me about all-purpose and self-rising flours. I made my first ever biscuits for my new hubby using all=purpose flour. Needless to say, the dog wouldn't even eat them. They were like bricks. Now I know the difference between the 2 flours.

I am making your sugared pecans right now. I tried to post on your blog but couldn't do it.

I pride myself on being a very good cook so when something doesn't work out, I can be very hard on myself!

A few years ago, during the summer months, I wanted filet mignon, but we didn't want to fool with the grill. So, I thought I'd simply broil them like I normally do (a little fresh minced garlic on top, some blackened seasoning, little s&p...). I get so weary of cleaning that broiling pan, though...and I remembered that my mom always put foil on hers for easier cleanup....I just couldn't remember WHICH part she put the foil on. So without much thought, I put it on the part that is the most difficult to clean--the top, whereby eliminating any drips into the pan. "Wow, I am GENIUS!" I thought, and put them under the broiler. I went into the living room, sat down with a glass of wine and smelled the worst "chemical" smell in the world...and saw smoke pouring out of the oven. My "genius" had caused a huge fire from the broiler and the foil, and I had to get out the extinguisher and "hose" down our lovely dinner!!!

I was absolutely mortified--how could I do something so stupid??? My dh was so sweet, though, since everything else was done (baked sweet potatoes and steamed asparagus) he said, "you know, it's good to have a vegetarian meal every now and again!"

Now, I simply wash the broiler just like I always did

At least you could at your blooper! A few years ago, I was baking something and I swore the recipe said 1/4 cup of nutmeg. I thought, wow that's a lot, but proceeded to grate up 1/4 cup of nutmeg & put it in the batter! Boy was that ever a mistake! As soon as I took a tiny taste I was overpowered by the nutmeg. I read the recipe over again & it said 1/4 teaspoon! I got a magnifying glass for my kitchen after that one!
