Posted - Nov 22 2009 : 4:28:23 PM My family is from up north and it was always STUFFING cooked inside the bird. This was always my FAVORITE part of the meal. My husband is from down south and it was always cornbread dressing cooked in a casserole dish. This was always his favorite part of the meal. When we married neither of us was willing to give up our favorite so I now make both every year.
What do you do in your house? Stuffing inside the bird or dressing on the side?

Posted - Nov 23 2009 : 08:33:41 AM Both on Thanksgiving...and usually cornbread type. For our Christmas dinner I am more likely to do just dressing so the turkey cooks more quickly...not as much time for cooking on Christmas day for sure. I tend to do regular bread stuffing on Christmas instead of cornbread. I grew up saying Dressing (southern grandparents on both sides) but usually say stuffing now.

Our stuffing recipe is bread based and our dressing is cornbread based so not only are they cooked different but they really are completely different.

Posted - Nov 23 2009 : 07:43:32 AM Stuffing...and dressing. I make dressing because I don't cook a turkey (for Christmas). My mil makes the turkey and the stuffing is inside. I don't know what's in it--I don't ask, because I probably wouldn't eat it if I knew. It's tasty, though :)
My "dressing" is made with apples, pecans, sesame seeds, celery, onion, bread, etc.

Posted - Nov 23 2009 : 07:12:17 AM Dressing is what we do in my little household...Must have got it from my dad's Texas side of the family. I spent a lot of my childhood with my Texas grandparents and great aunt and they always called it dressing. We do put an onion and herbs in the inside of the bird to flavour the gravy juices Yum! getting hungry just thinking about it!

Posted - Nov 23 2009 : 05:52:52 AM Well, I grew up in Vermont, and stuffing and dressing were the same thing - always cooked inside the bird. Now that I am living in PA our Amish friends call it "filling". That was a new one to me. Does anybody else outside of Lancaster County call it filling?

Posted - Nov 23 2009 : 05:51:36 AM I always stuff the bird with stuffing. On the following night for leftovers, I make dressing since the stuffing is always gone by then. The stuffing cooked inside the bird winds hand down in flavor every time.

But - if I use the giblets, my kids and my husband refuse to eat either, although the way I grew up, that is what made it really good.
So, I cook the giblets, then use the broth only to make the stuffing and dressing... and I get to snack on the heart, liver and gizzard later.

My mom always made the BEST cornbread DRESSING . . .in a side dish, but I've never mastered it like she did so I quit tryin. We DO really like rice pilaf. CJ

Posted - Nov 22 2009 : 7:07:18 PM Stuffing, it was always made inside the bird. I still remember being in line in the college cafeteria, and asking for stuffing. The lady serving looked totally amazed saying she hadn't heard it called that in years! That was only 70 miles from where I grew up, but it WAS cooked in a big pan not a bird.

Posted - Nov 22 2009 : 4:42:05 PM Dressing. My grandma made the best dressing ever but she put raw oysters in hers. It was just too gross for me so when she taught me how to make it I did it that way for awhile. I do not put them in now. She died several yaers ago and that's my main job now. There are no raw oysters in the dressing anymore. Sorry, Grandma. It's still really good. My step dad always cooks the turkey and he just puts an apple and onion in the cavity.
