I have been a little nervous about the economy and have started to fill my panrty. I was not brought up in a religion that practiced this and it has all been new to me. If anyone has any great recipes for cooking from storage items I would love them. I am really working on using wheat right now. I have been a little shocked at where some of the long term for storage items come from...China. I went to place an order with Thrive and decided to ask where some of the stuff came fron. I'm glad I did. I was shocked at how much of it was from China.

I order from Azure and the provident living site is very helpful. THere are lots of recipes online for cooking from food storage. If you have an LDS bookstore in your area (or order online... Deseret Books- I think) there are all kinds of good food storage books. The cannery is also a great resource (the potato pearls are the best). Another resource is Cash and Carry or other restaurant supply places where you can buy lots of staples in bulk quantities. I think the name of the online order place in Idaho is Walton Feed???

THe best thing to remember is to store what you eat and eat what you store. If you do not use whole wheat, don't make it a huge priority. If your family eats lots of pizza, stock up on the ingredients to make pizza. Rotate!!!!

I canned meat this year and I love it! I have always done fruit, veges and jam in the past. The chicken and hamburger have been great! I canned a couple of different sauces and bought alfredo sauce for the pantry. Don't forget the sugar or honey.

Check out their website...the food is NOT from China, is mostly organic and they have every kind of grain you could imagine! I didn't know what to do with most of them, so I bought their cookbook. Some of my favorite long-storing foods are: honey, beans, quinoa, rice, corn, wheat, oats, lentils, and amaranth. If you have any questions, feel free to email me. Good luck!

If you have a Mormon church in your community, they should be able to recommend a dry pack cannery(I think that is what it is..Aunt Jenny please?) THey are experts in long term storage of all food types, and the canneries are open to anyone; you do not have to be Mormon.

Also look at other grain. barley, amaranth, quinoa, rice. All are good storage grains. And dried corn is long lasting as are all sorts of seeds.

do yourself a favor and DO NOT order anything that originates from China, you are taking the lives of your family and yourself by using the garbage that comes from there. i am sure there is some kind of food co-op in your area,am I right all you other Washington girls?
