Okay, if you've got kids sometimes this is all they will eat! I am on a quest to stop buying box meals and make my own for less and hopefully much healthier! I found this on the web and think I'll give it a try. Homemade Ground Beef Helper 2 c. nonfat dry "instant"milk 1 c. cornstarch 1/4 c. unsalted chicken or beef bouillon powder 2 Tbsp. onion flakes 1 tsp. dried basil 1 tsp.dried thyme 1 tsp. black pepper 2 Tbsp. dried parsley 1 Tbsp. garlic powder Mix the ingredients together and store in an airtight container. Use as base mix for hamburger helpers.
Chili Tomato Mac Brown 1 pound ground beef or turkey, drain off fat Add 1 c. water, 1 and one half cups uncooked macaroni, 2 (15 oz) cans diced tomatoes, 1 Tbsp chili powder, and 1/2 cup of the "Helper Mix". Simmer covered about 20 minutes or until macaroni is tender. Serves about 4 persons.

Kate, thanks for the info on that book. Going to try and see if the library has it or go to Amazon - they have everything.

Posted - Oct 02 2009 : 11:26:08 AM There is a book that was out in the 80's called "Make a Mix Cookery", maybe your library has it? Or, you can probably get it from Amazon used. I think it is one of the best cookbooks! The first 1/3 of the book contains mixes that you can make, the last part has recipes that you can make from them.

Posted - Oct 02 2009 : 08:07:07 AM Stove Top Stuffing 6 cups cubed bread 1 tablespoon parsley flakes 3 cubes chicken bouillon 1/4 cup dried minced onion 1/2 cup dried minced celery 1 teaspoon thyme 1 teaspoon pepper 1/2 teaspoon sage 1/2 teaspoon salt Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake bread 8 to 10 minutes. In large bowl toss bread with remaining ingredients till evenly coated. Store in a air tight container. Will keep for 1 to 4 months or 12 months frozen. Cook just like you would for the prepackaged mix. Combine 2 cups stuffing mix with 1/2 cup water and 2 tablespoons melted butter. Makes 7 cups

I already knew it wasn't healthy, but my main goal is health and saving MONEY!! Anyone else have any good recipes for homemade versions of things you normally buy in a box or pre-packaged? Please share!!!!

Recipe#1 Homemade Beefaroni Sautee onion 1 small, 1 bell pepper, minced garlic about 3 cloves I brown this with olive oil brown 1lb. ground beef 1 small pkg. elbows cooked and drained 2 cups spaggetti sauce ( I usually have my homemade) but you could use a medium size jar grated chedder cheese sprinkle ontop Mix everything together and put into a caserole oven safe dish top with cheese I usually use alot and bake @350 for about 20 min. recipe#2 Rice Beans Tomatoes and Beef cooked rice enough for 6 onion, garlic browned in olive oil 1lb. cooked ground beef 2 cups diced romas ranch beans brown onion and garlic cook beef set aside while rice is cooking dice up tomatoes once again I use beans that I have frozen and thawed out or you can use canned about 1-2 cups Then add altogether heat thourghly Hugs, Laurie

Posted - Oct 01 2009 : 06:35:04 AM I do this quite a lot. I refuse to buy the boxes. I don't have a mix, but I will generally make mac and cheese (boil noodles, add milk, cheese and butter) and brown an lb of hamburger then add whatever sounds good. Sometimes I make it Mexican by adding chili powder, jalapenos, onions, cumin etc. Sometimes I make it Italian by adding basil, oregano, tomatoe sauce, mozzarella. My husband's favorite is bacon cheeseburger. For that one I season the meat while browning, fry bacon and crumble into the meat then add the mac and cheese. Super easy, very cheap.
